37 - Midvale Slams Gnaden 53-25 (2-20-37)









The Midvale Blue Devils:  Front - Frank Baumholtz, Richard Raylor, Richard Belknap, Bill Stevenson and John Hawkins.  Back - Head Coach M.R. Helwig, Fred Swinderman, Francis Herron, Donald Spencer, Robert Swinderman, Manager Archie Virtue and Arthur Price.




The Gnadenhutten Indians:  Front - Robert Metzger, Earl Hamilton, Leland Goettge, Edward Kohl, Oliver Kohl and Gusty Stoller.  Back - Manager Gllen Cappal, Robert Miller, Earl Crites, Paul Bennett, Fred Plummel, Warren Parrish and Manager Robert Rank.


DOVER - The Midvale Blue Devils (1-1) (18-11) ran down the Gnadenhutten Indians (1-2) (15-17) in an important Consolation Tournament game, blasting the Indians by a 28 point margin, 53-25.  The Blue Devils led the entire game.  Gnaden had no one in double figures as they were shown the showers.  It was Seniors forward Bob Metzger, forward Gusty Stoller and guard Earl Hamilton's last game as an Indian.

In the 1st quarter, Midvale rushed to a 16-4 lead and continued their sprint as they led by 23 points 31-8 by halftime.  Their momentum continued in the 3rd quarter; although, both teams racked up 8 points and the Blue Devils led 39-16.

Midvale Senior forward Frank Baumholtz (The Midvale Marvel) gained game honors by pouring in 22 points (8 field goals and 6 free throws).  His teammates, forward John Hawkins and center Dick Belknap contributed 14 and 10 points (6 field goals and 2 free throws; 3 field goals and 4 free throws), respectively.  Gnaden was led by Junior guard Oliver Kohl and Sophomore forward Leland Goettge with 6 points apiece (3 field goals and 1 field goal and 4 free throws).

NOTE:  Ralph Moore 18, Tuscarawas, has been notified to report at the training camp of the El Dorado Club of the Cotton States League on March 29.  Moore, a former outfielder for the Tuscarawas Broncos high school team and White Lidy Oil teams, is a brother of Lloyd (Whitie) Moore, 22, who figured in making sandlot history in Newcomerstown while pitching for the Heller Bros. team and last year was acclaimed the pitching sensation fo the El Dorado Club.  "Whitie" will report March 1st for training with the Cincinnati Reds at Tampa, Florida. (He would go on to play for Cincinnati and the St. Louis Cardinals and end his baseball playing years in 1942 with a 30-29 pitching record.)

Ralph is the 4th member of the Moore family to enter professional baseball.  His father, the late Gene Moore and a brother, Ray Moore played several years in the major leagues. (Friday, Feb 26, 1937)
