35 - Strasburg Falls To Amsterdam 27-25 (3-14-35)

DENNISON - Tuscarawas County's 2 entries in the Class B Division of the Eastern Ohio District Basketball Tournament at Dennison, fell by the wayside last night.  In the afternoon the Bolivar Cardinals (5-2), one of the best in the county, were upset by a race-horsey crew of the New Matamoras Rams.  Also last night, the Strasburg Tigers (5-2), who share the pride of the county with Bolivar, were nosed out by the same team which sent them home from the tourney last year.  The score of the New Matamoras-Bolivar fiasco was 38-36 and the Strasburg-Amsterdam thing 27-25.

Strasburg, like several other teams on the program yesterday, was victimized by a 2nd-half uprising.  Amsterdam trailing 4-2 in the 1st quarter, was still trailing at the intermission, when the Rams cut loose a heavy barrage which cut the lead to one point with the score 19-18, Strasburg, by the end of the 3rd quarter.  Then in the opening minutes of the 4th period, Amsterdam jumped to a 22-19 advantage as the Tigers' only scoring in the entire 3rd quarter had been a pair of free tosses by Senior guard Adrian "Fuzz" Miller.  Miller dumped in another foul in that 4th period to bring the Tigers up to a 22-20 score.

The Rams then charged out to a 26-20 six-point lead on buckets by forward Pilatti.  A foul shot by Junior guard Don Scherer and another field goal by Miller, put the Tigers in striking distance once again.  Then Pilatti connected with a free throw.  A moment later Senior center George Denzer scored a side shot, but the gun cut short any rally that might have resulted.  Center John Manson, all-district star of a year ago, was back with the Amsterdam club and the spear-head of its attack.  He suffered an injury to his right ankle in the closing minutes of the game, but refused to go out.

Manson lead the Rams attack with 11 points (4 field goals and a free throw), while teammate Pilatti had 9 additional points (4 field goals and free toss).  Game honors went to Miller with 12 points (2 field goals and 8 free throws, followed by Senior forward Jim Dreher with another 5 points (2 field goals and a free throw for the Tigers.
