DOVER - A thrilling contest between traditional enemies was the peak of the tournament, reached in the meeting of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-0) (21-12) and the Strasburg Tigers (0-1) (32-7). A dog-eat-dog battle from the opening whistle to the final gun, the game kept the fans on the edge of their seats and dwarfed other contests on the program.
Strasburg, unleashing a surprise attack, took a 9-5 lead in the opening period, but lost it in the 2nd quarter when Sugarcreek-Shanesville forged ahead 19-15. The Tigers backed away from their advantage in the 3rd period and the 2 teams went into the stretch with the Pirates leading 27-25.
Junior forward Cliff Mooman of the Pirates won scoring honors with 12 points tallied on 5 field goals and 2 free throws. Junior guard John Harmon also had a double figure outing dumping in 10 points (3 field goals and 4 free throws). For Strasburg, Senior guard Don Scherer led his team with 11 points in a heart breaking losing cause (4 field goals and 3 free throws).
Sugarcreek-Shanesville's victory over Strasburg was expected, but not by a 1-point margin as a result of which the Tigers can claim a moral victory.
