36 - Strasburg Ekes Past Gnaden 29-28 (2-22-36)









Strasburg Tiger Senior Guard Don Scherer picks up game honors by scoring 10 points in leading his team to a close 29-28 victory over the Gnadenhutten Indians.


DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (1-1) (33-6), in its only Consolation game, defeated the Gnadenhutten Indians (0-2) (14-15) 29-28 in an overtime contest, breaking a 25-25 deadlock which existed when the regulation time ended.  The Tigers ended up in the Consolation Division when the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates beat the team in another close game 37-36.

The Tigers ran up a 6-2 first quarter score and continued to dominate in the 2nd quarter as the scoreboard showed them in the lead 17-7.  The Indian defense checked Strasburg's scoring in the 3rd quarter by limiting the Tigers to only 2 points, while Gnaden picked up 12 points to tie the score at 19-19.  By the end of the 4th quarter they were tied again at 25-25.  At the end of the game Strasburg was still standing when they defeated the Indians by 1 point.

Leading the charge for Strasburg was Senior guard Don Scherer with a 10 point total (4 field goals and 2 free throws).  The hard-charging Indians, in a losing cause, were led by Senior forward Roy Kennedy with 8 points (4 field goals), Senior forward Earl Leonard with 8 points (3 field goals and 2 free throws) and Senior guard Harold Kohl with 7 points (3 field goals and a free throw) as the team faultered and fell in a blaze of glory.

NOTE:  The Strasburg Tigers and Stone Creek Panthers survived the opening rounds of the Consolation Tournament at Legion Hall.  The Panthers, the real surprise team of the meeting won 2 games, disposing of the Port Washington Purple Riders and Mineral City Tigers, both of whom defeated Stone Creek during the regular League season.  The Panthers defeated the Purple Riders 31-17 and later turned the Tigers back 23-14.  Mineral City had previously eliminated the Eagles 22-14 in a Consolation contest. With favored sons still occupying 3 of the 4 positions, the county's Annual Class B Basketball Tournament reached the semi-final stage with 3 thrill-packed contests before a capacity crowd at Legion Hall on Saturday.  The 3 winners, together with the Bolivar Cardinals, which drew a bye in the opening round and then qualified for the semi-finals by defeating Baltic 50-30 Friday night, will meet again this weekend to finish the tourney.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville plays Dundee and Bolivar meets the Midvale Blue Devils.  Friday the tournament opens with 3 games in the evening, the semi-final game of the regular tourney and 2 Consolation Division games.  The latter division of the tournament will be played up to the finals on Saturday afternoon and the final will be presented Saturday night along with the Championship games of the regular division.
