32 - Fans To Flock To Class B Basketball Tournament

DOVER - County cage fans will flock to Legion Hall tomorrow night for the opening program of the 1932 county basketball tournament.  Competition in the annual classic will be inaugurated with 3 games on Thursday night.  Three other contests are booked for Friday night with the semi-finals scheduled for Saturday afternoon and the championship game Saturday night.  Semi-final games are booked for 2PM and 3PM on Saturday afternoon.  The Championship game will start at 8:30PM.  The winner of the tournament will be presented with a trophy by the Spidell Printing Company of Strasburg.  The winner of the 1932 League Championship---Strasburg---will be given a trophy by the S. Milk Company of this city.  Tournament officials have reduced the price of admission to twenty-five and thirty-five cents per session.  Programs, containing the names and numbers of players on each of the 10 competing teams, have been printed and will be distributed at tournament games by Ress Brothers of Dover.

The Strasburg Tigers, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Midvale Blue Devils are expected to advance to the 2nd round in tonight's opening games.  Midvale may strike a snag in Bolivar, always a strong tourney team, but should emerge the victor.  Strasburg, by a victory over Baltic, will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon, but Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Midvale, providing both win their games tonight, must battle each other in what will be one of the classics of the tourney on Friday night.  A large crowd is expected tonight inasmuch as 3 of the 4 ceded teams, picked as the strongest entered, will appear on the program.  Because of a drop in admission prices to a 35 cent top and arrangement so that the tourney will be run off on 2 successive nights and Saturday afternoon and night, a large attendance is anticipated throughout the event.

If the drawings are much of a benefit, Strasburg and the Gnadenhutten Indians have the best chances of going through to the final game.  Each drew a bye in the 1st round and will have to win only one game to gain the semi-final.  Gnaden, which meets The Tuscarawas Broncos at 8PM Friday, will play the winner of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville/Port Washington Purple Riders and Midvale/Bolivar Cardinals bracket in the semi-final on Saturday afternoon.  The Indians, by virtue of having to play only one game should be fresher than the team that will oppose them for the right to enter the finals.  If either Sugarcreek or Midvale make the finals they certainly will have earned such laurels as may be distributed.  These teams have the toughest assignments in the tournament.
