55 - Midvale Tames Mineral City Tigers 74-60 (2-19-55)

DOVER - The stage is set for the crucial semi-final battles in the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball's 33rd annual tournament with 3 of the circuit's 4 top teams lining up in Wednesday night's headliners.  The Tuscarawas Broncos defending Champions, who upset the Strasburg Tigers in the finals last year, face the favored Bengals once again in the upper bracket battle, while the Midvale Blue Devils will take on the Gnadenhutten Indians in the lower bracket.

A preliminary to the regular tournament contests will find the Stone Creek Golden Panthers meeting the Mineral City Tigers in a Consolation Division tussle.  Saturday night's action saw the Blue Devils ease past the Tigers of Mineral City 74-60, while the Eagles ousted the Cardinals from the tournament 69-39 and the Golden Panthers bounced the Purple Riders 55-42.

The Midvale Blue Devils (2-0) (16-6) (62-29) trotted past the Mineral City Tigers (0-2) (4-17) (12-51) into the semi-finals round.  Head Coach Pete Hilliard's quintet appeared to have too much for the scrappy Tigers from the very outset.  The Blue Devils exploded for an 8-0 lead in the early moments of the contest and except for a brief time at the outset of the 2nd frame when the Cats rallied and had the game under control all the way.  Four of the Diablo starters were in double figures in the scoring column with 2 of the Orange and Black holding up their teams' offensive attack.

Senior Bob Zontini and Junior Larry Swinderman were the top dogs in the Blue and Gold attack as they counted off 19 and 18 points, respectively, with the steady Senior Ron Weaver contributing 17 , while Sophomore Dick Leggett added 10.  Pitchin' Junior Paul Lindsey, Mineral City's high scoring forward, was the top scorer in the game with 23 markers.  Lindsey had an off night; however, as he missed 13 free throw chances in 22 attempts.

The Tigers ace was held in check throughout the 1st quarter and failed to score from the field until midway in the 2nd period.  Junior Larry Yost was 2nd top scorer for the Spotted Cats with 13 points.  Midvale took control of the game early with Zontini zipping in to the lead the attack, while the entire Blue Devil lineup contributed to a 23-point 1st quarter.  Mineral City managed to hang on with Yost and Junior Terry Kirker leading the way and the Tigers began making a break in the 2nd stanza.  Yost flipped in 2 fast field goals to counteract 2 by Swinderman of the Diablos and Kirker and Lindsey chimed in with 4 more points and it appeared that the game would settle down into a close battle.

Zontini, Leggett and Weaver had different ideas; however, and the Midvale trio pulled the Blue Devils out to a 42-29 advantage before Swinderman capped the 1st half action to give the League runner-ups a 45-29 edge.  The Diablos put the game on ice in the 3rd stanza by moving out to a 24-points advantage, 66-42 at the far turn.  The Midvale Reserves began to take over in the final canto and Head Coach Bob Penrod's Cats closed the gap to 14 points at the final buzzer.

In the lone contest during the regular season, Midvale walloped Mineral City 91-74.

DOVER - In the 2nd Consolation Division contest of the night, the Bolivar Cardinals (1-2) (4-17) (48-47) gave the Baltic Eagles (2-1) (17-6) (33-49) an argument for the 1st quarter, but the Eagles, who led 14-8 at the 1st turn, eased into the victory spot as they controlled the game from that point on.  The Flyers were out in front 30-14 at the half time intermission with Senior Jim Wallace and Senior Fritz Syler pacing the 2nd period splurge.  Head Coach Jim Ross's charges continued to romp in the 3rd stanza and were out in front 48-25 at the far turn.

Both coaches sent in their Reserves for much of the final canto and the Orange and Black continued to pull ahead as the contest continued.  Baltic's height under the boards was too much for the Cardinals whose high scorer, Senior Jack Renner, who picked up 3 quick personal fouls in the 1st and 2nd quarters and could never break loose.  Renner was held to but one field goal and 4 free throws, while the Cardinal and Gray made only 12 action shots as the Eagles controlled both boards.

Wallace scored 16 points, Syler 14, Senior Errol Jacobs 12 and Junior Jim Uher 10 for the Flyers.  Renner, Sophomore Ken Haueter, Sophomore John Geers and Freshman Wayne Rouf all dropped in 6 points for the Cards.  Baltic also beat-up Bolivar in their regular season contest 63-38.

55 - Stone Creek Trips-Up Port 55-42 (2-19-55)

DOVER - The Port Washington Purple Riders (1-2) (15-8) (22-53) started off fast against the Stone Creek Golden Panthers (2-1) (15-9) (26-41) in a Consolation Division game with Sophomore Ed Bates once again sparkling in the opening quarter.  The Purple Riders galloped to a 12-5 lead midway in the period, but were slowed down as Senior Bill Jones and Sophomore Ron Deibel began connecting for the Golden Panthers.

The Purple and White held a 15-11 lead at the end of the 1st quarter, but faded badly in the 2nd frame and the Blue and Gold, unable to get their own attack in high gear, edged into the lead 22-21 shortly before the half ended.  Port clung to their lead; however, as Senior Paul Frank scored just before the intermission.  The 2 teams battled at close quarters in the 3rd stanza with Deibel and Freshman Rod Reinhart giving the Panthers a slight edge and Junior Dave Wherley sinking 2 free throws to send the Cats into a 36-33 lead at the far turn.

From there on out it was Stone Creek's turn to "call the shots" and the Golden Panthers held on to their slim lead until midway in the period when Senior Bill Jones began to connect and rocket his team into a commanding position.  The Panthers  rushed to a 50-38 lead with only Junior Tom Jones holding the Riders up for the first 6 minutes of the final quarter.  The Cats put on the finishing touches and clinched the victory and the right to advance with a final burst.

Jones and Deibel led Stone Creek with 19 and 14 points, while Frank was high for Port Washington with 13.  Bates, who didn't score a field goal after the 1st quarter, had 12 and Jones got 11 for Port.  The 2 teams split during the season with Port winning the 1st contest 66-64 and Stone Creek pocketing a win 71-70 in their last game.

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers staged a show of strength in their tournament debut at Memorial Hall last night and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Dundee Bulldogs were shunted out of the meet as they absorbed their 2nd defeat.  The League-Champion Tigers turned in a stunning all-around display of power as they sent the Purple Riders down into the Consolation Division bracket 87-46, moving into the semi-finals against the Tuscarawas Broncos.

The Baltic Eagles edged past the Pirates 63-59 and the Bolivar Cardinals slipped in with a 64-61 victory of the Bulldogs to win the right to meet in the 2nd game tonight.  Fouls proved costly to both the Pups and the Corsairs as both clubs lost a majority of their starting lineup on personal fouls and were edged in exciting finishes.  Port will go up against the Stone Creek Golden Panthers in the opener tonight, while the Midvale Blue Devils and Mineral City Tigers are scheduled to meet in the championship bracket contest on the triple-header.

The Strasburg Tigers (1-0) (19-2) (89-24) unleashed a crushing offensive attack that knocked the Port Washington Purple Riders (1-1) (15-7) (22-52) back on their heels after a nip-and-tuck 1st quarter.  Sophomore Ed Bates was the only reason for the Port's 1st-period showing as he traded baskets with the entire Tigers lineup.  Bates just couldn't miss as he tossed in 5 field goals to score 10 of the Purple Riders' 11 markers, while Jerry Froman, the Bengals' talented Sophomore starter, connected for 4 goals in that opening stanza.

The Orange and Black's balance gave Strasburg a 16-11 lead at the close of the 1st quarter and they continued to roll along at a smooth pace with Senior Jerry (Goose) Van Kaenel and Junior Jim Kuecher carrying the brunt of the load in the 2nd frame.  The Tigers, missing very few opportunities to score, led 40-25 at halftime intermission.  The Bengals attack crackled with efficiency in the 3rd stanza as Strasburg sizzled to a 54-25 lead in the first 3 and a half minutes.

The Riders, scoreless for the 1st part of the 3rd quarter, counted only 6 points for the entire period, while the Tigers whipped in 28 markers and were far out in front 68-31 moving into the final canto,  Head Coach Ken Newlon's power-packed lineup stormed to a 79-33 lead in the 1st three minutes of the final quarter and then the Reserves took over for both squads as the crowd lost interest and drifted out.

Goose scored 22 points, Kuecher 19, Froman 16 and Senior Jerry Haswell 14 in the Bengal balanced scoring attack, while Bates, who got only 4 markers in the 2nd half, ended up with a total of 18 points to lead the Purple and White.  During the regular season, Strasburg clocked Port Washington 88-53.

55 - Baltic Gets Past Sugarcreek 63-59 (2-18-55)

The Baltic Eagles Errol Jacobs.  Errol produced 15 points while leading his team to a 63-59 victory over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  He has accumulated 39 points in 2 games in  this tournament for an average of 19.5 points per game.

DOVER - In another Consolation Division contest, the Baltic Eagles (1-1) (16-6) (32-49) and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-2) (10-11) (57-42) staged another donnybrook in the 2nd game as the capacity crowd was  treated to a close game from the opening whistle to the final buzzer.  The Pirates were victims of the same unfortunate circumstance as was the Dundee Bulldogs as the Corsairs' cause was hampered when 3 starters were sidelined in the 4th canto, all on personal fouls.

Senior Al Craigo left early in the quarter with Junior Keith Gerber and Junior Ted Brown following within seconds of each other midway in the period.  The Bucs, who had led by as much as 6 points in the 2nd frame, were trailing by 11 points 54-43 when the fouls began to catch up to them.

Despite this, the Eagles had to hang on in the closing minutes of the contest as the Maroon and Grey battled back against the odds.  Senior Bill Pfister dropped in 2 buckets which were matched by the Orange and Black midway in the quarter and the score read 58-49 when Sugarcreek-Shanesville made their bid.  Sophomore Dan Bear, who came in as a substitute, Pfister and Junior Jim Troyer led the uprising.

Troyer, whose long shots all during the game kept the Pirates in the contest, tallied 3 field goals in the last minute and 45 seconds, but just fell short of the mark.  The Corsairs drew within 3 points, 58-55 at the 1:45 mark, but 5 free throw shots helped Baltic freeze the decision in the last minutes and earn the right to advance in the tournament.

Troyer's sharpshooting netted him 18 points, while Pfister got 14 and Ted Brown 10 for the Bucs.  Jacobs picked up 15 markers, Reidenbach 14, Jim Uher 11, and Jim Wallace as well as Fritz Syler gather 10 more for the Eagles.

Baltic also won their game with Sugarcreek-Shanesville by a score of 54-47.during the regular season.

DOVER - In the 1st Consolation Division contest, the Dundee Bulldogs (0-2) (4-17) (31-51) and the Bolivar Cardinals (1-1) (4-16) (48-46) was a "cracker" from start to finish with the aggressive Bulldogs losing 4 of the starting 5, but still giving the Cardinals a toe-to-toe fight right up until the final buzzer before surrendering the verdict.  The Pups lost Senior Bob Baker in the 2nd frame, Junior Gary Slemmer in the 3rd and Junior Don Levengood and Senior Duane Burrell in the last canto with the Red Birds taking advantage of the situation and winning at the free throw line.

The Red, White and Blue, with its lineup intact in the 1st quarter, jumped to a 16-7 lead midway in the period and was still out in front at the the quarters end 21-17 as the Cardinals closed fast.  Gary Slemmer of Dundee and Junior Bob Numbers of Bolivar were the respective scoring leaders in the opening 8 minutes, while Levengood stepped into the picture for the Bulldogs and Senior Jack Renner took over for the Cardinal and Gray and the game settled to a real struggle.

The Cardinals grabbed a foothold and were out in front 36-31 with the Pups losing Baker just before the halftime intermission.  The Dundee crew deadlocked the count at 48-48 in the 3rd stanza, but the Red Birds grabbed back the lead and maintained it for much of the remaining distance.  Bolivar was on top 51-50 going into the final quarter and the Cardinals lost that edge in the 1st minute of the stretch drive as Burrell hit for a push shot and Levengood connected for 2 free throws.

Sophomore Ken Haueter hit on a layup, Sophomore Dave Wolf and Renner hit at the free throw line and Red Birds were back out in front 56-54.  Levengood was lost to the Bulldogs on fouls early in the 4th canto, but after the score was tied 2 more times, Bolivar went ahead to stay with Wolf and Renner leading the way.  The final decision was not determined until Renner scored a free throw in the last second of play.

Renner picked up 26 points, Wolf 14 and Numbers 12 for Bolivar, while Levengood drove home 25 markers and his teammate Gary Slemmer dropped in another 12 for Dundee.  During the regular season, Dundee slapped Bolivar 53-43.

The Tuscarawas Broncos' Senior Terry Deems set a tournament record lighting the nets on fire with 35 points against the Stone Creek Golden Panthers last night at Memorial Hall.  Terry led his team to a whopping 91-76 triumph over the Golden Panthers in the Panthers 1st tournament loss of 1955.  Deems' 35 points surpasses Elmer Linard of the Port Washington Purple Riders who dropped in 34 points in 1946.  (1955 Yearbook Photo)


DOVER - Just when it looked as though the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament would run through quietly, up pops the Gnadenhutten Indians with an upset victory and the stillness that hung over Memorial Hall during the 1st night's action was shattered.  The Indians, defeated twice by the Baltic Eagles in the regular season, pinned a 57-52 defeat onto the Eagles in the opening game of the meet's 2nd round last night and advanced all the way to the semi-finals round.

The Stone Creek Golden Panthers' prowled away to an early lead over the defending Champion Tuscarawas Broncos, but couldn't stop the "Mutt and Jeff" combination and finally bowed 91-76 in the nightcap.  Gnaden will see action next Wednesday night at 9:00 against the winner of Saturday's clash between the Mineral City Tigers and the Midvale Blue Devils, while Tusky goes into the semi-finals in the upper bracket to await the winner of Friday night's Strasburg Tigers and Port Washington Purple Riders encounter.

The tournament takes a breather tonight with a full slate of 3 contests on tap for Friday night at Memorial Hall with 2 of the games in the Consolation Division bracket.  The Dundee Bulldogs tangles with the Bolivar Cardinals at 6:30, while the Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Baltic Eagles collide in the 2nd contest slated to start at 7:45 with the Strasburg Tigers and Purple Riders bringing down the curtain.

The Golden Panthers moves into the Consolation Division bracket and will play the loser of the Strasburg-Port fray in the opener Saturday at 6:30.

The Stone Creek Golden Panthers (1-1) (14-9) (25-41) kept the upset Gremlins in business in the early part of the 1st quarter as the Golden Panthers swished into an 11-4 lead before the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (13-5) (46-40) whose Deems-Davis (Mutt and Jeff) combination could get rolling and get the Broncos back in the ball game.  The Bronco-Busters continued their high scoring records with 102 points in 1946, 92 in 1947 and now 91 last night holding the 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions in the annual  tournament record books.  The Panthers total was also quite high.  Senior Terry Deems connected for 35 markers and Senior Rich Davis added 31 to account for all but 25 of Tusky's total, while Junior Theo Riggle picked up 13 of those points.

Freshman Rod Reinhart, Sophomore Ron Deibel and Senior Bill Jones led the Cat's early uprising as Stone Creek jumped into the lead and then held on to keep a 20-18 advantage at the end of the quarter.  Deems, Davis and Riggle moved into high gear in the 2nd frame to counteract the efforts of Jones and Reinhart and Tuscarawas had a 46-39 advantage going into the 3rd stanza.  Tusky doubled the Golden Panthers output in the 3rd quarter and the Broncos appeared to be in as they held a 70-51 edge as the 4th canto started.

The Bronco-Busters increased its lead to 20 points, but the Panthers moved back into contention and came within 8 markers as the clock ran out.  Deems fouled out with almost 2 minutes left, but Davis carried on and tossed in 6 points as time ran out to give a decisive victory to Tuscarawas.

The Cats lost Sophomore Don Poland on fouls in the early part of the 4th quarter with Deibel following after the 3-minute mark had been reached, while Jones went out in the last few seconds.  Jones was Stone Creek's high scorer with 29 markers, while Reinhart hit for 20 and Deibel connected for 18.
