34 - Strasburg Stall Dooms Tigers 24-23 (3-10-34)

DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers (7-1) today had joined the Dover Tornadoes in the ranks of the unemployed champions.  A little over-confident, the Tigers were caught unawares and nosed out 24-23 by the Amsterdam Rams in a semi-final contest in the Eastern Ohio District Class B Basketball Tournament at Dennison last night.  Strasburg, defending District Champion from last year, stalled too soon in the game when they had a lead of only 2 points.  The Tigers had apparently forgotten, for a moment, that Amsterdam has one of those teams that doesn't know when it's whipped.  The upset resulted.  Strasburg had the better team.  Still has it today.  But, the Rams are in the finals tonight with Chandlersville of Muskingum County.

The Amsterdam speed gave it a 6-0 lead early in the 1st period, but in the late minutes of the same stanza Strasburg put on the steam and pulled up with the score tied 6-6 just as the quarter ended.  In the 2nd period the Tigers marked 7 points, while holding their opponents to 2 and the half ended 13-8, Strasburg.  The Rams rallied in the 3rd period and managed to tie the count 19-19 before the final period ended.  The Jefferson County club had tied the count at 13-13 and then stepped out to lead 14-13 before Strasburg turned on the steam again to reach a tie at 15.  Amsterdam again stepped out and led 19-15 during the period, but the Tigers managed to tie it up again as the quarter ended.

Strasburg stepped out front 21-19 in the opening of the final period, but Amsterdam tied the count there and then forged ahead on a free throw and a field goal to give them their 24 points.  Senior forward John "Johnny" Studer, Strasburg ace, hooped 1 of 2 free tosses to bring his team's score to 22.  With only a few seconds left, a Rams player fouled Tiger Junior center George Denzer and then made the free throw, using up the several seconds left and the game ended just as the referee was about to toss the ball  up at center.  Amsterdam was ahead 4 times in the game.  Once as much as 6 points.  And, each time the Tigers displayed their superior ability, but once they caught up with their foes they slumped into lethargy.  That was true during the entire game and the championship their best ball when behind.

Studer led the Strasburg scoring drive with 8 points (3 field goals and 2 free throws).  Guard Bud Reiger trailed him with 6 (1 field goal and 4 free throws).  Jim Manson, Amsterdam center, was the games high scorer with 11 points however.  He scored 5 field goals and 1 free throw.

34 - Tigers Offense Routs Holloway 42-27 (3-8-34)

DENNISON - Outshining by far, anything that stepped onto the floor in their dividion, the Strasburg Tigers (7-0) last night stole the show of the Class B Championship from the onslaught of the Holloway Blue Devils, a touted, but worthy opponent, by a score of 42-27.  The slow, steady, rolling offense and the impenetrable defense of the Tigers, broke the morale of the Holloway team wide open in the game's early stages and made the Strasburg victory look-easy.  Held to 1 field goal in the entire 1st half, the Blue Devils threw all caution to the winds in its attempt to stage a 2nd-half rally that would bring victory within its grasp.  The attempt was futile.

Senior Tiger forward John "Johnny" Studer clicked for 18 total points...16 from the field and 2 from the free throw line.  His speedy and accurate shooting was too much for the Blue Devil guards.  Guard Bud Reiger of Strasburg netted 12 points by closely following up shots and snatching the ball from the backboard.  He outplayed the entire field.  Juniors, forward Bill "Doddle" Haas and center George Denzer played their usual outstanding floor games, while Senior guard Adrian "Fuzz" Miller and Junior forward-guard Jim Dreher divided honors at their positions, all Tigers.  In the 2nd half, Reiger went to center and Denzer to guard.  With that combination, Head Coach Paul M. Roby's lads seemed almost invincible.  Their passing bewildered Holloway from the beginning.  Defense was close except for a few minutes of the 3rd period, when Davis and Dean, both Blue Devils, hit for 2 field goals apiece in quick succession.

It was not until the 2nd quarter that Strasburg began the machine-gun-like scoring.  The Tigers missed 10 foul shots, while Holloway was wide on nine.  Studer, whose 1st bucket of the game was not counted, carried the scoring attack to the last second...hooking in a shot as the final gun sounded.  As a result of the victory, Strasburg will meet the Amsterdam Rams in the semi-finals tonight at 7:30PM.

34 - Strasburg Slams Dennison 29-18 (3-3-34)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers (6-0) had just too much basketball in them for Dennison's Railroaders at Legion Hall Saturday afternoon as they crushed the down-county outfit under a 29-18 score.

The melee was the hardest and roughest of the entire tournament with a packed house cheering the athletes on, with Strasburg commanding a 9-7 lead at the end of the 1st period and a 13-8 edge at the half.  The Tigers had the losers swamped, 18-8 at one point in the 3rd quarter, only to give up 7 straight markers to shorten their lead to 18-15.  The quartet ended at 21-17.  The winners then lengthened out in the final period, outscoring their adversaries 8-1.  The Railroaders were also held to 1 point in the 2nd quarter, while Strasburg was gathering four.

To guards Bud Reiger and Senior Adrian "Fuzz" Miller go the defensive laurels, the former clamping forward Jimmy Cryder of Dennison with only 1 point and the latter putting the bee to Railroader forward Harvey Bridgeman, scoring 4 points against the star's five.  Reiger, who retired on fouls in the last period, was high-man runner-up to Junior Bill "Doddle" Haas' 9 points with 8 markers.  Twenty-eight personal fouls were called throughout the contest, with Reiger and Zimmerman, Dennison guard, being banished.

34 - Mineral City Loses In Final Minutes 33-29 (3-2-34)

DOVER - The Mineral City Tigers (3-2) went down to a hard 33-29 defeat at the hands of the Irondale Red Raiders after appearing to have the edge on the Red Raiders during most of the melee.  Irondale hopped to an 8-6 lead at the quarter and still held it at halftime 13-12, but the lead seesawed in the 3rd stanza and finally ended in a 20-20 knot.  The last quarter saw the count tied at 3 different junctures, until the final minutes when the winners broke loose with Tiger center Bill "Legs" Sattler sitting on the sidelines, banished on personals.

Sattler and guard Frank Scott turned in nifty games for the losers, while forward Rornick, center Speraindt and Ray, giant center, shown for the Raiders.

34 - Studer Hooks...Strasburg Wins 19-17 (3-1-34)

DOVER - Senior forward John "Johnny" Studer, Tiger scoring ace, was Johnny-On-The-Spot when he swished through the winning basket on a hook shot from the pivot line as the Strasburg Tigers (5-0) brought down the Cadiz Cardinals 19-17 in the Eastern Ohio Sectional Tournament.  With all their knowledge of consistent passing, blocking and close guarding in use, the Tigers kept a small margin over the Harrison County team.  But, in the last quarter, Cadiz staged a 6-point rally and in the last 2 minutes tied the count...which stood deadlocked at 17-17 until Studer made the winning bucket.  Strasburg led all the way with the score 5-3 in the 1st, 13-7 in the 2nd and 17-11 at the end of the 3rd period.

George Denzer, junior center and floor man par excellence for Strasburg, was high scorer with 8 points.  His passing and blocking were features of the game.  Studer was 2nd high with 7 points, a mark equaled by Peoples, tallish Cadiz Cardinal center.  It was the best Class B game yet seen on the Legion boards since the Tuscarawas County Tournament.

34 - Adena Drops Dundee In Close One 28-25 (3-1-34)

DOVER - Warrior guard Stanley Wasko was the nemesis of the Dundee Bulldogs (2-2) as Adena maintained a lead that stood up even after the Bulldogs' last quarter rally.  The score was 28-25 with Wasko and his cordon of cagers on the long end.  Sam Fetters led the Dundee attack with 11 points (5 field goals and a free throw).

Dundee trailed Adena throughout the game, but tore through with a 7 point rally in the last period to come within 3 points of a tie.  The rally fell short because of the Bulldogs' failure to take advantage of it's long shot possibilities.  Senior forward Paul Baker was the leader in the passing attack.  Wasko's shooting was from all angles inside the foul line.  The Adena Warriors led in the 1st quarter 8-4, led 14-10 at the half and 24-18 at the end of the 3rd stanza.

34 - Dundee Bulldogs Fate To Be Decided Today

DOVER - Three Tuscarawas County basketball teams...seeking places in the District Tournament at Dennison next week...will swing into action tonight at Legion Hall in the 5-game opening of the Class B Sectional cage tournament.  Unless disqualified late today the Dundee Bulldogs will meet the Adena Warriors of Jefferson County in the opening game at 6PM.  The Bulldogs, runner-up to the Strasburg Tigers in the county tournament, is accused of using an ineligible player and today Andrew Beachy, Principal of the school, made a personal visit to Columbus to interview State Commissioner H.R. Townsend who will decide whether the team may continue.  In the event Townsend rules the team out, he will also name its successor which will either be the Midvale Blue Devils, a semi-finalist, or the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, runner-up in the Consolation Tournament.

But, tonight's play...Clark of Coshocton County and the Magnolia Cardinals of Carroll County will play at 7PM.  The winners of those 2 games will play Friday at 10PM.  The Dennison Railroaders, one of the strong contenders, meets Keene of Coshocton County at 8PM tonight.  Immediately following will be the Strasburg-Cadiz Cardinals fracas at 9PM.  The winners will meet Saturday at 2PM.  Thus, one of the Tuscarawas County teams will be eliminated from the 4 to go to Dennison for the District meet.  Should the Railroaders and Tigers win their 1st games, the two will meet Saturday in a tilt which would probably be one of the best of the tournament and which would attract the most local interest.

The Millersburg Knights versus the Scio Panthers of Harrison County at 10PM will be the nightcap of the program.  Officials will be Ernie Godfrey of Ohio State University and Bille Lange of Muskingum College.  Admissions will be 25 and 35 cents for each session.
