27 - Strasburg Gets By Dundee 21-17 (2-25-27)

SUGARCREEK - The Strasburg Tigers (1-0) (8-3) defeated the Dundee Bulldogs (0-1) (0-5) in the 2nd game of the Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament held at the Community Hall in Sugarcreek on Friday night.  The remaining games in the tournament are being played on the Dover American Legion floor today (Saturday).

Strasburg upset the dope by rocking Dundee.  The latter team was a favorite to win over the Tigers, but the Franklin-township squadron held Dundee almost helpless throughout the game.  The Strasburg team held sway from the beginning and led at every quarter.  Dundee outscored Strasburg in number of field goals made, but free shots pulled Strasburg to the front and gave them their 1st tournament victory.  Dundee scored 6 field goals, while Strasburg caged only five.  The Tigers led the Bulldogs the entire route, beginning in the 1st period with a 6-4 lead.  They increased that to a lead of 8-5 in the 2nd quarter, then made  it 15-8 and victory in the 3rd period.  Deems and Huth were the scoring stars for the Strasburg aggregation with 9 and 6 points.  Seniors Walter Neidenthal and Walter Mizer followed up with 4 and 2 points.  Juniors Lester Price and Glen Wilds were the scoring guns for Dundee with 9 and 4 marks, while Walter and Haager finished out the scoring with 3 and 1.

27 - Bolivar With Easy Win Against Mineral City 23-8 (2-25-26)

SUGARCREEK - The Bolivar Cardinals (1-0) (7-4) defeated the Mineral City Tigers (0-1) (1-5) by 15 points in the opening round of the Tuscarawas County Class B cage tourney held in Community Hall at Sugarcreek on Friday night.  After the Strasburg Tigers-Dundee Bulldogs game the remaining games in the tournament are being played on the Dover American Legion floor today.

Bolivar and Mineral City played first.  Bolivar's victory over Mineral City was not a shock to the fans.  The Bolivar team was conceded victory over the Tigers before the game even started.  Bolivar stepped into the winning column immediately and held an 8-0 lead over their opposition at the end of the initial quarter.  When half-time rolled around Mineral City had scored only 1 field goal, while Bolivar had mounted their total to 12.  The Cardinals kept scoring in the 3rd period and the Tigers caged another field goal and 2 foul shots to boost their total to 6.  Widder, Bolivar scoring ace, was ejected from the game on account of personal fouls shortly after the start of the 3rd period.  Zutavern and Widder led Bolivar with 9 and 8 points.  Senior John Reiger followed up with 6 points to round out the Cardinal scoring.  The Mineral City Tigers were led by Harris and Fetters who scored 3 points each and Ludlam finished their scoring with 2 more points.

27 - Another High School Team Added To Basketball Tournament

DOVER - The entry of New Cumberland High School into the County Class B Basketball Tournament to be held Saturday, February 26, at Dover Legion Hall, has force yet another change in plans for the tournament and will force starting of play Friday evening, February 25th.  Drawings will be held Saturday, February 19, at 2PM at the office of Charles Barthelmeh, county superintendent of schools, at New Philadelphia, at which time it will also be decided where the initial tournament games on February 25, will be played.  The change in plans is the 2nd forced on the committee in charge.  The Eagles of Port Washington High School upset original plans by entering the tournament a week ago.  Now the New Cumberland High School makes entry.  Neither of these teams were in the county Class B league.  The letter sent out Monday by T.G. Syler, Sugarcreek, in charge of the tournament, to heads of county schools follows:

We are again compelled to change our plans for the tournament.  New Cumberland is coming into the tournament, and as the winning team must play 4 games, part of the tournament must be played on Friday evening, February 25th.

All schools entering the tournament will send a representative to a meeting called for Saturday, February 19 at 2PM at the County Superintendent's office.  At this time the drawing will be done and the place decided upon for the Friday evening games.  If a school has no representative at the meeting some one will be designated to draw for that school if the school is entering the tournament.  I am asking all schools to let me know before February 19 whether they intend to enter the tournament.  Unless they do not let us know and do not have a representative at the meeting it will be assumed that they are not entering and we will draw with that understanding.  No school will be permitted to enter the tournament after the drawing.  Before deciding to enter we would like to know if you are willing to share in the losses, should there be any, as well as the profits.  We are hoping that nothing else will come in the way of these arrangements and that we may have the most successful tournament that we have held.

27 - 5th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament

DOVER - Eight teams had been entered in the Tuscarawas County Class  B Basketball Tournament to be held at the American Legion Hall on Saturday February 26.  The 8 teams are:

Baltic Eagles
Bolivar Cardinals
Dundee Bulldogs
Gnadenhutten Indians
Mineral City Tigers
Tuscarawas Broncos
Strasburg Tigers
Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates

Following is a letter written by T.G. Syler, Sugarcreek, in charge of the Class B County Basketball Tournament at American Legion hall February 26th relative to the rules of the tournament and the method of drawing:

The Port Washington Eagles have applied for admission in the basketball tournament.  While we do not like these eleventh hour applications, Mr. Townsend, the commissioner of athletics advises that we admit them.  This upsets our method of drawing that was decided upon, so we will draw in the usual way.  The drawing will be done at the Legion building the morning of the tournament at 8:30.  The captain of each team will draw unless some one else is designated to do so .  The drawing will be in alphabetic order.

You will please send your eligibility list so that it will be in  my hands before the tournament.  Only 12 players may be on this list.  The eligibility must be certified to by the administrative head of the school.  One hour before the 1st game 8 of these 12 players must be designated as the ones to participate in the tournament.  No substitutions will be permitted after this list is submitted.  Consult your December bulletin.  "The December bulletin has  the following to say about protests:  All protests against teams or individuals must be made in writing by the administrative head of the school and filed with the commissioner on or before February 19th in order that he may have time to investigate the charges.  The protest must be accompanied by evidence.  If a player becomes ineligible after that date, games in which he participates will be thrown out and his team disqualified.  The eleventh-hour and post-season protests are unfair."

You will receive in a few days advertising which I will ask you to place.  You will also receive tickets for your team and coach.  Four games will be played in the morning, 3 in the afternoon and 1 in the evening.  H.L. Weick of Cantonwill referee all the games.  If you would like to have programs of the tournament printed, please send me the names of your players with the numbers they will wear and the name of the coach.  This list of the players will have no bearing on eligibility.  I am trying hard to arrange for a successful tournament.  If you have any suggestions to make I would be glad to have them.

Relying on your cooperation and with best wishes for a successful tournament, I am, yours for clean athletics,

T.G. Syler
Manager

26 - All-Tourney Team 1926

DOVER - It is a rather difficult proposition to name 5 basketball players on an all-county or an all-tournament basketball team, the writer has found after having watched over 50 Class B high school floor artists display their ability in games of the Tuscarawas  County Tournament held at the American Legion Hall Saturday.  The tourney games disclosed that many nifty basketball players are made right in the smaller schools of the county and are favorable to some of the players on class A aggregations such as Dover, New Philadelphia and Uhrichsville.

Participation in the tournament and those who stood out more prominently than others were:

Moomaw, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates forward
Ed Wyss, Strasburg Tigers forward
Randall Gerber, Bolivar Cardinals center
Walter Neidenthal, Strasburg Tigers guard
Maurice Helwick, Bolivar Cardinals guard

Others whomade remarkable showings in their games were:

Harlan Sliffe, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates forward
Elmer Dichler, Gnadenhutten Indians forward
Luke Warnes, Strasburg Tigers center
Oliver Watson, Sugarcreek-Shanesville guard
Jim Fisher, Bolivar Cardinals guard

Moomaw, the flashy Sugarcreek forward and his assistant, Shiffe were two of the highest point scorers for any team in the tournay.  Moomaw was the highest individual scorer in the tourney.  He scored 32 points from the field, while Sliffe gathered in 10 field baskets and two fouls for his total of 22.  Moomaw has been chosen on the 1st All-Tourney Team because of his ability to get the ball out then make the points for the quad.  He is a fast defensive man too.  Sliffe was handed 3 or 4 of his field baskets when he loafed under the net.  He is a fast man on the defense too.    Wyss; although, he was on a losing team, played wonderfully in the 2 games in which his team took part.  He scored 14 points, all from the field.  But, Wyss took the ball down lthe floor for the Strasburg aggregation on several occasions to pass off and not take his shot.  Neidenthal, Strasburg guard, the writer believes should be placed on the mythical five, too.  He played a fine defensive game against Bolivar in the afternoon when his team lost by the score of 15-13 and scored 2 field baskets and one foul from his guard position in 2 games.  His method of guarding is excellent.  Halwick, was by far the flashiest guardon on the floor in all of the tournament games.  The fiery number 4 for the Bolivar squad kept the scorers of the opposing teams from bucketing too many points and in the final game Saturday night, guarding Moomaw, he  kept the shifty Sugarcreek forward to 2 baskets.  Gerber, Bolivar center, scored 31 points for the 2nd highest total made by one individual on the floor Saturday.  He plays a fast game and can  dig the ball out, find an opener, work it through and win his team another basket in most instances.

The 1st all tournament team has been chosen in the ability displayed by players in the tournament games played all season.  Warnes; although, a fast center, failed to display any fine plaing on Saturday and for that reason was chosen 2nd on the tournament team.  Others who deserve honorable mention are:

Harry Notter, Bolivar Cardinals
Paul Kennedy, Gnadenhutten Indians
Bob Neff, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates
Glen Jones, Strasburg Tigers
Clarence Uhrich, Gnadenhutten Indians

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAMS

1st Team

Moomaw F Sugarcreek
Wyss, F Strasburg
Gerber, C Bolivar
Neidenthal, G Strasburg
Helwick, G Bolivar

2nd Team

Sliffe, F Sugarcreek
Dichler, F Gnadenhutten
Warnes, C Strasburg
Watson, G Sugarcreek
Fisher, G Bolivar

Notter, who has been the Bolivar scoring ace all season and Wyss led all forwards in scoring was not placed on either of the mythical five squads because of his inability to get and play a defensive game as he has on offense.  Notter scored several field goals Saturday in 2 games, but was never on the defensive.  Most of his shots were made after he had waited near his basket or near a teammate like Helwick, Gerber or Fisher who dig it out and would pass to him.

26 - Sugarcreek Wins 4th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (2-26-26)

DOVER - Sugarcreek-Shanesville (3-0) (6-1) Pirates won the Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament Championship at the Dover Legion Hall Saturday night when they edged the Bolivar Carinals (2-1) (6-4) by 1-point.  Other schools, Baltic, Dundee, Gnadenhutten, Mineral City, Strasburg and Tuscarawas had been eliminated in the morning and afternoon games.  Along with the championship of the county, the Sugarcreek five carried away the silver cup offered by The Daily Reporter and earned the right to enter their school in the District Class B Tournament which will be played in Cambridge on March 11th.  The evening game was much like the semi-final in the afternoon when the Bolivar Cardinals upset the Strasburg Tigers which played fast basketball and the game zigzagged back and forth when suddenly the Tigers found themselves leading at the half.  For awhile in the final period, it looked like Sugarcreek's hopes for winning the game had been crushed by the Bolivar fast break.  Moomaw opened the scoring for Sugarcreek by dropping in one from under the net from a quick pass from Bob Neff.  Moomaw had 2 field goals for 4 points and Junior center Bob Neff had a field goal for 2 points.  Sophomore forward Harlan Sliffe dropped in 5 field goals and one foul shot to lead the Pirates with 11 points.  Senior guard Oliver Watson ended the Sugarcreek-Shanesville scoring when he hit a foul shot.  Senior forward Harry Notter hit 4 foul goals to lead the Cardinals with 8 points.  Junior center Randall Gerber had one field goal and 3 foul shots for 4 points, while John Reiger picked up 2 points as did Maurice Helwick when he hit 2 foul shots.  Senior Jim Fisher ended the Cardinals scoring by hitting yet another foul shot.

Sliffe played about the best game for the Sugarcreek team.  Notter also had a good scoring game for the Bolivar Cardinals, but his defensive work was terrible.  Gerber and Helwick had a great game for the Cardinals as well.  Watson, the flashy guard for the Pirates, was banished from the game by officials, Gross and McIntosh, shortly after the 2nd half was started.  He had commited 4 personal fouls by then and the rule in those days were 4 fouls and you were out, which would change to 5 in the future.

26 - Strasburg Girls Champs After 15-3 Win Over Tuscarawas (2-26-26)

DOVER - Something in the order of a championship has to be kept in Strasburg this basketball season, so after the Strasburg boys had lost out in the semi-finals of the county tournament Saturday afternoon the girl team of the Strasburg village came to the rescue and won the county Class B girls championship by defeating 6 Tuscarawas High School ladies in a fast game on Saturday night.  The game was a preliminary to the Sugarcreek-Shanesville-Bolivar Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Championship Tournament game.

Strasburg led the Tuscarawas ladies all the way, opening up in the 1st few minutes to a 3-point lead.  They were ahead of their opposition at the end of the 1st half 3-2.  Miss Helen Benfer, flashy forward on the Strasburg squad, tumbled in 5 baskets and one foul for 11 of her team's 15 points.  She was by far the best player on lthe floor.  Florence Affolder, Tusky guard, was taken from the floor by officials after she had been knocked out.  She was delirious when taken to the dressing room.

26 - Bolivar Shocks Strasburg 15-13 (2-26-26)

DOVER - Bolivar High School Cagers (2-0) (6-3) upset all the dope tabulated when they knocked the celebrated Strasburg High School crew (1-1) (7-3) off their stool and handed them a pretty defeat in the semi-finals of the County Class B Tournament at the Legion Hall Saturday afternoon.  It was the 1st time this season that the Tigers had been defeated by a county team aggregation.  Twice during the county League season, Strasburg defeated the squad to whom they fell victim.  Once on the Strasburg floor when the Tigers rallied to a 37-27 win over the Bolivar boys and later in the season on the Cardinals' floor the Strasburg Tigers were victorious 50-39.  But, it's just as Bolivar Head Coach Joe Hermann says, "Some teams are known as season teams and others are known as tournament teams."  Coach Hermann made that statement shortly after Strasburg was annihilated by the Bolivar quintet.

Strasburg trailed the Cardinal team all though the contest.  Senior forward Harry Notter of Bolivar, opened the game by scoring right off the bat.  His shot under the basket was followed with one from the center of the floor, dropped through by Junior Walter Neidenthal, Strasburg guard.  His shot tied the score and that was the closest that Strasburg came to going into the lead.  Junior center Randall Gerber, Senior guard Maurice Helwick and Notter all three scored following Strasburg's 1st basket.  This put the score at 8-2.  The Strasburgers added 4 more points when Senior center Ed Wyss and Senior Luke Warnes dropped baskets thru the hoop.  Netter scored Bolivar's 12th point just as the 1st half ended 12-6.  Beginning the 2nd period, Gerber from Strasburg tallied from the foul line then followed a few minutes later with a field goal, and the scoring mounting to 13-9.  Senior guard Glen Jones of the Tigers scored once and Wyss swished 2 thru the nets putting the score to 13-12 with Bolivar still leading.  Senior guard Jim Fisher scored the last basket for the winning combination and his shot was followed by one made by Warnes of Strasburg.

When the final whistle was blown the crowd in the Legion auditorium fairly went crazy.  Some over the fact that Bolivar had won and some over the fact that Strasburg had lost.  It was really a great blow to the Strasburg followers who had watched their team lay away a great many neat victories.  The guarding of Helwick, a starch defensive man, was the best in any of the tournament games.  His passwork was fine and he held 2 forwards, Senior Delbert Gordon and Yackey, scoreless.
