60 - Gnaden Gets New Coaching Staff

GNADENHUTTEN - The Gnadenhutten Indians' High School coaching staff for the 1960-61 season was complete today with the announcement that Ron Sakola of New Philadelphia will be the head basketball coach and Ted Martin of Newcomerstown will serve as assistant cage and head baseball coach.

Sakola, Freshman football and basketball coach at New Philadelphia High School, was selected from among 17 applicants.  The Quaker mentor also assisted in track.  Martin is a former Gnadenhutten athlete.  He lettered 4 times in basketball, track and baseball before graduating in 1952.  For the past 2 years he has been coaching at Newcomerstown in both basketball and baseball.

The 2 replace Bob Gaume, who resigned the basketball post last month and Dick Ronald, an assistant who has been named head football coach at the Tuscarawas Broncos High School.  Sakola came to the New Philadelphia Quakers High School in 1959 from Elyria after serving as a Junior high assistant in football, basketball and track.  At Wittenberg University he played 2 years' Varsity basketball and later earned his B.S. Degree in Education at Miami University at Oxford.  The 23-year-old bachelor will also teach physical education, driver's education, science and serve as track coach.

Martin is a graduate of Marietta College where he starred in baseball.  He also played professional ball in Louisiana in the Milwaukee Braves' farm system.  He served as basketball and baseball coach at New Straitsville 2 years prior to accepting the Newcomerstown post.  Last season his Trojan baseballers were runner-up in the Sectional Tournament to the Dover Tornadoes, while this year's edition will make its debut in the joust today against Carrollton.

Father of 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, Martin is married to the former Norma Schupp of Gnadenhutten.

60 - Hiland Trips-Up Garaway 58-45 (3-11-60)

The Hiland Hawks' basketeers had mixed emotions following last night's District Class A Tournament title victory over the Garaway Pirates.  While whooping it up, they also displayed sportsmanship in withholding some of the jubilation long enough to accept congratulations from the opposition team.  Even one of the Hiland Cheerleaders got into the act early and almost was spilled in her efforts.  (PHOTO...The Daily Reporter, Dover, Ohio)



BRILLIANT - Seven straight victories...and then Hiland!  Fifteen more consecutive wins...and who was it?  None other than those pesky Hawks...

Last night the rivals met on the neutral Brilliant High School floor in the "rubber" match of their season series which had seen each post victories on home courts.  This one counted the most.  A trip to next week's Regional Tournament at Canton's Memorial Fieldhouse, in addition to the Class A District title, was at stake.

For this game, more important than any played previously, the Hiland Hawks were prepared.  It defeated the Garaway Pirates 58-45!!!

Head Coach Jim Stull's Garaway Pirates(5-1) (8-0) (22-2) never quit.  In fact, this great Pirate Squad went down fighting.  It was a big season, the best in the history of the consolidated combine and provided many revered moments for those who had followed the former forces of Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Dundee High Schools.

The Pirates didn't win all the championships, but then few seldom do.  Their record speaks as a momento to a fine basketball team.  Last night, though, the Hiland Hawks at 24-2 were better.

It was a great hour of triumph.  Not since the 1948-49 season has a Holmes County Team advanced to the Regional Tournament.  The Walnut Creek Cardinals, which was included in the Hiland consolidation along with the Berlin Hawks, carried the banner that season.  It advanced to the Regional finals where it lost to a great Waynesburg Mohawks Team.  The Mohawks, oddly enough, was absorbed in another consolidation, Sandy Valley.

"I'm dumbfounded!"  Hiland Head Coach Bob Schrock spoke in all sincerity following his team's lightning-like victory.  "When I saw that 20-point lead I just couldn't believe it.  We changed our offense some...we took a chance on the type of ball we were going to play...and we decided to go at it whole hog or none.  And it worked out."

"Attitude wise, on the basketball floor, as well as in the classroom, this is the best bunch I've ever worked with.  I'm more proud of them for that than winning the game."  Seldom has one team played as important a role in the season of another team, as did Hiland in Garaway's.

The Corsairs carved out 7 straight victories, before a trip to the Hawks' gym stopped the streak 60-56 in an overtime.  They later avenged that loss by defeating the Flyers 57-52 at Sugarcreek.  This time the chips were on the table and the Hiland Hawks came through with a straight flush to win going away.

Before most had settled down for an expected close score Garaway had tossed the ball away 6 times and Hiland had turned opportunists by flying to a 10-0 lead in the very first 4 minutes of play.  The Pirates, despite all its efforts, many which led only to frustration, never recovered.  It cut the gap to 6 and 5 points several times...but that was the closest it could come.

The Flyers played it smart after racking up the early lead which resulted from its well-knit press.  It began working for the close in shot.  With 5-9 Linus Miller turning in a dazzling display out front and 6-1 Gene Gerber outfoxing the Corsairs with his crashing drives from the side, the Hiland Hawks turned the game into a rout midway in the final canto.

At the time Hiland began their binge the Garaway Pirates were behind 44-36 and 4 minutes remained to play.  When the clock hands hit the 1:05 mark the Hawks were on top 56-36.  "It just wasn't our night," Stull said, "I think they beat us all the way down the line.  I have to give them the credit, they were a better team than us tonight.

"There's really not much you can do when you can't get the ball in the basket.  We certainly wish them all the luck in the world at Canton."  The Pirates' 2 great Senior stars, Charles "Chuck" Stingel and Koran Zehnder, made their bow in the game.  Stingel led the Corsairs scoring with 18 points and Zehnder, who found difficulty in finding openings in the Flyers defense, made 12 markers.

Gerber set the scoring pace for the Hiland Hawks with 24 points and Miller connected for 20.  Unofficial figures showed the Garaway Pirates ending with 36.6 percent of their field goals connecting as they netted 17 of 46.  They made 11 of 17 from the free throw line.

Hiland's percentage, also unofficial, was nothing short of amazing.  It made 22 of 38 field goals for 57.8 percent.  It tossed in 14 of 21 free throws.  The Hawks will enter next week's Regional Tournament with a .920 won and lost percentage.  As District King, the Flyers replaces the Midvale Blue Devils.  The Blue Devils were spilled by the Northwestern Huskies last year in their Regional Tournament opener at Canton.

Last night Schrock was asked if, perhaps, his team had possibly been thinking of a try at Northwestern as it ripped through the Pirates of Garaway's defenses.  Northwestern, which led the Associated Press Class A poll this season, edged the Hawks 49-47 for their only other defeat.  Schrock was quick to comment, "we don't try to think too far in advance.  We just take these games one at a time."

Be that as it may.  But there is still the possibility the teams could meet at the Regional opener...or still yet the finals.  Northwestern, along with the Lowellville Rockets and the Frazeysburg Red Raiders or the Hopewell Blue Tornadoes, which play tonight at New Concord, will be competing in the meet slated to take place next Friday and Saturday nights.  Drawings will be held tomorrow afternoon in the Holiday Inn Motel at Canton.

60 - Garaway Slams Warren Consolidated 65-46 (3-9-60)

BRILLIANT - One of the most rabid basketball rivalries in this area is due for its 3rd and final chapter of the 1959-60 basketball season tomorrow night in the Class A District Tournament finals at Brilliant.  The Garaway Pirates and Hiland Hawks, schools not much more than a stone's throw from each other, will travel more than 60 miles to battle at 8:00 for a berth in next week's Regional Tournament at Canton's Memorial Fieldhouse.

Last night, the Pirates and Hawks stole the thunder from representatives which advanced from the Brilliant Sectional Tournament a week ago.  The Pirates turned in a masterful exhibition and played better ball than the Hawks, it's Dover Sectional counterpart, when it steamed past the Warren Consolidated Blue Ramblers 65-46.

The Flyers' performance was shoddy, but still good enough to defeat the Jewett Wildcats 47-40.  More than 1,600 fans, a great many of them traveling from Tuscarawas and Holmes counties, saw the 2 games.

And despite the distance involved, it is conceivable the Brilliant Hgh School Gymnasium will be crammed to the corners once again tomorrow night.  The game will be the "rubber" battle between the 2 teams.

The Hiland Hawks edged the Garaway Pirates 60-56 in an overtime on December 19th at Hiland.  The Pirates took a 57-52 nod on its court on February 9th.  The 3rd and final meeting...the most important of all...is set for the neutral Brilliant floor.  If the Corsairs' play last night is any example of what is to take place tomorrow night, it could waltz into the "sweet 16" Regional group.

The Garaway Pirates (5-0) (8-0) (22-1) had some weak moments before showing their Championship style in the final canto by outscoring the Warren Consolidated Blue Ramblers (11-11) 25-11 to nail down the victory in nifty style.  Late in the 3rd quarter the score was knotted 35-35.  "Chuckin" 6-1 Senior Charles "Chuck" Stingel hit for 2 free throws, connected on a tip and 5-10 Senior Koran Zehnder zipped in a jump shot to give Garaway a 5-point lead going into the final quarter.

They never stopped, turning what had been a closely fought battle into a rout in the final 8 minutes.  The Pirates really stretched out on the spacious Brilliant floor and literally ran the Blue Ramblers off the court.

Stingel and Zehnder formed the big 1-2 punch for the Corsairs.  The Bucs' veteran center had the crowd sitting in awe with his devilish accurate hook shot, while Zehnder came through with a brilliant defensive and offensive show.

In the 3rd period, the 2 veterans scored all 14 points between them to keep the Garaway Pirates right in the thick of the contest.  Zehnder led the point department with 21 points, while Stingel followed with 18 markers.

Team play has been the key to Garaway's success this season.  Senior Jim Gerber, 6-0 Junior Tom Andreas and Bob Raber all played tremendously big parts in the victory.  Gerber also ended the night in double figures, scoring 10 points, while Raber and Andreas connected for 7 apiece.  The Pirates tossed in 23 of 53 shots from the field for 42.2 percent and hit 19 of 24 from the free throw line.

Setting the scoring pace for Warren Consolidated was Jim Meeker with 13 points.  Bob Simpson followed with 11.  The Ramblers made 16 of 50 field shots for 32 percent and 14 of 22 free throws.

In the Hiland Hawks (23-2)-Jewett Wildcats (17-6) contest, Hiland controlled the opening tip and from that point on the ball game.  It increased its lead to 9-4 and was on top 9-5 at the end of the 1st quarter.  That was the closest Jewett could come to the Holmes County Squad.  The Hawks were on top 19-9 at halftime.

The Wildcats threatened several times in the game, pressing in an effort to gain ground, but each time failed.  The Flyers wanted to run and the Cats didn't.  It was just enough to throw the Hiland Hawks off stride.

Linus Miller was the only Hawk in the double figure column.  He scored 16 points.  The Jewett Wildcats' Ray Patterson scored 14 to lead his squad.

Hiland made 15 of 40 from the field for 37.5 percent, while Jewett fired 56 floor shots and made 14 for 25 percent.  The Wildcates added 13 of 23 free throws and the Hawks 17 for 26.

60 - Garaway Enters District Tournament Against Warren Consolidated of Tiltonsville

DOVER - All roads lead to Brilliant!  Scores of basketball fans from Tuscarawas County and Holmes County will be making their way to the river city tomorrow afternoon and night.

There are 2 big reasons for the journey...The Garaway Pirates and Hiland Hawks...2 of the finest teams ever to come out of the Dover Class A Sectional Tournament.  The squads will be making their initial appearances in District Tournament play.

Hiland, which has lost only 57-52 to Garaway and to undefeated powerhouse Northwestern Huskies in 22 contests, will face the Jewett Wildcats (17-5) at 7:30.  The Pirates, loser only to the Hawks in a 60-56 overtime duel, while racking up a fine 21-1 record, will meet the rugged Warren Consolidated Blue Ramblers (11-10) From Tiltonsville in the 9:00 nightcap.

It is a night that has been a long time in coming for both squads.  The Corsairs have not advanced into District Tournament competition since the fine 1944 Sugarcreek-Shanesville squad turned the trick.

Not since the days of Bobby Troyer and company has the Flyers, then under the banner of the Walnut Creek Cardinals, made the District trip.  Oddly enough both teams previously won District titles and advanced into Regional Tournament play before being eliminated.

As another oddity both teams represent schools that were consolidated in the last 2 years.  Garaway resulted from a merger of Dundee and Sugarcreek-Shanesville schools.  Hiland comprises the former Walnut Creek and Berlin schools.  Pirate Head Coach Jim Stull will go with his season-long starting lineup of 6-1 Senior Charles "Chuck" Stingel at center, Senior Jim Gerber and 6-0 Junior Tom Andreas at forwards and Bob Raber and the high-scoring Koran Zehnder at guards.

Starting for the Hawks will be Linus Miller and Terry Hershberger at guards, Gene Gerber and Phil Miller at forwards and Bob Hochstetler at center.  Victories will put Garaway and Hiland in Friday night's final, marking the 3rd time they have met this season.

60 - Garaway Stops Killbuck 61-46 (3-6-60)

The Garaway Pirates' Saturday night Co-Captains, Bob Raber (left) and 6-0 Junior Tom Andreas, continue something that has become a habit for the Pirates of Garaway this season...that of winning trophies.  They were presented the Sectional Co-Championship Trophy by County Supt. W.E. Laws, Tournament Manager, following a 61-46 victory over the Killbuck Bucks.



DOVER - Basketball Inc....Garaway...a company headed by Jim Stull, with Koran Zehnder, Charles Stingel, Tom Andreas, Jim Gerber and Bob Raber as chief members of the board of directors, today carried the hopes of all Tuscarawas County into District Tournament play.  The Garaway Pirates (4-0) (8-0) (21-1) put on a scoring rush in the final minutes of their game with the Killbuck Bucks (16-6) Saturday night to defeat the Holmes County quintet 61-46.

Wednesday night at 9:00 the "company" hopes to increase its assets one more notch.  It meets the Tiltonsville Ramblers (11-10) in the District Class A Tournament at Brilliant.  The Hiland Hawks (22-2) earned the other District berth Friday night when it defeated the Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves (17-2) 56-52.  It will tangle with the rugged Jewett Wildcats (17-5) on Wednesday at 7:30.

Victories by both the Pirates and Hawks would put them opposite each other for the 3rd time this season.  The Flyers earned a 60-56 overtime decision in the 1st meeting, while the Corsairs later avenged the defeat with a 57-52 triumph.  Saturday night Garaway was not impressive...at least not as much as it had been during the regular season when it ran roughshod over 17 opponents.

In increasing their season record to 21 victories the Pirates connected only 23 times in 77 attempts from the field for a 29.9 percent mark.  In all fairness it could undoubtedly be attributed to their week long layoff since winning the Tuscarawas County Class A  Tournament title and the small Dover Memorial Hall floor.

Used to the wide open spaces of their home court the Corsairs never really got an opportunity to stretch their legs.  They did; however, get their fast break moving in the final 4 minutes of the contest to turn a close game into something of a romp.

Prior to that the score had been tied 3 times and 7 points had been the greatest lead by the Garaway Pirates.  The Bucks led momentarily when it went on top 32-31 with 1:17 remaining in the 3rd stanza.  The Score stood 45-44, with the Pirates ahead, when they finally turned on the steam.  In the last 4 minutes they outscored the Buckaroos 16-2 to nab the title.

Killbuck's scoring ace, Jerry Allison, injured his ankle with slightly more than a minute to play, but by that time the Corsairs were out of reach.  Turning in a splendid performance and playing the remainder of the game on the bum ankle, Allison poured in 29 points and was the only Buck in double figures.

Junior Tom Andreas at 6-0 was the "Man of the Hour" for the Garaway Pirates.  In the 1st quarter he scored 8 of the Buc's 12 points and continued his fine play, despite being dealt his 4th personal foul early in the final canto.

He topped the Pirate scoring with 22 points.  Center 6-1 Senior Chuck Stingel came through with 14 and guard Bob Raber added 12.

Koran Zehnder, the Corsair's leading pointman this season and 2nd in the county, was held to his low of the season when he scored only 9 points as the Bucks did a good job defensively.  His previous low was 12 against the Gnadenhutten Indians in the 2nd meeting of the 2 teams.  Killbuck was worse off than Garaway in the percentage department.  It made only 18 of 68 goal attempts for 27.2 percent.

The Pirates added 15 of 22 free throw shots and the Bucks 10 of 16.

60 - It's Garaway or Killbuck Headed To District Tournament

DOVER - Two down and 2 to go!  That might be the sub-title for the Class A Sectional Basketball Tournament being conducted at Memorial Hall.

Already down are the Malvern Green Hornets and Tuscarawas Valley Trojans.  Tonight and Saturday 2 more teams will fall by the wayside, permitting 2 others to advance to the District Tournament.

The vaunted Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves (17-1) and the equally rugged Hiland Hawks (21-2) will hold the spotlight when they clash tonight at 8:00 for a District berth.  The Tuscarawas County League and Tournament Champion Garaway Pirates will match speeds with the Killbuck Bucks tomorrow night at 8:00 for the other District trip.

After that there is only 2 more steps to gain on the State High School Tournament trail... Regional and State Tournament trips.  The Blue Waves will be led into tonight's contest by high-scoring Junior Ace Sandy Bonvechio.

Over the 18-game route this season, he scored 352 points for one of the top marks in the county.  He will be at a forward, opposite Dale Donohoe, who has scored 196 markers.

Mike Dorsey and Bob Patin will be at guards.  St. Mary's has the 2 biggest players in the county in Ed Dotto (6-4) and Joe Franz (6-3).  The big boys haven't scored much this season, but have played key roles in the success it has enjoyed as a result of their work on the boards.

The Hawks will probably go with Bob Hochstetler at center, Gene Gerber and Phil Miller at forwards and Terry Hershberger and Linus Miller at guards.  The only comparable foe the 2 teams have played was the Green Hornets.

Both Hiland and Dennison St. Mary enjoyed success over the Carroll County combine.  The Hawks trampled the Hornets 69-32 on Tuesday night in its opening Sectional contest, while the Waves took regular-season decisions of 70-18 and 57-38.

Other St. Mary victories have been 70-31 and 41-37 over Brewster, 66-46 and 93-55 over the Augusta Blue Devils, 52-47 over the Keene Panthers, 61-45 over the Navarro Falcons, 88-55 and 73-27 over Coshocton Sacred Heart, 74-38 and 62-46 over the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers, 93-44 and 75-39 over Cambridge St. Benedict's, 57-48 over Dishop Donohoe of Wheeling, West Virginia and 47-45 over Weirton Madonna.  The latter was runner-up in the West Virginia State Parochial Tournament this season.  Garaway and Killbuck have met only one foe by which to compare scores.  That is Hiland.

Garaway spilit with the Hawks, winning 57-52 and losing 60-56 in an overtime.  Killbuck has been a 3-time loser to Hiland.  It has fell 63-56 in the Holmes County Class A Tournament finals and 58-51 and 54-50 in regular season play.

Garaway's narrow defeat to Hiland is the only black mark on an otherwise perfect slate.  It has rolled to 20 triumphs.  Victories have been over Baltic twice, Strasburg 3 times, Fresno, Midvale, Port Washington, West Lafayette twice, Tuscarawas Valley 3 times, Hiland, Stone Creek twice, Gnadenhutten 3 times and Tuscarawas.

Head Coach Jim Stull of the Pirates, plans no changes from the lineup he used in the County Tournament last week.  Charles Stingel will be at center, Jim Gerber and Tom Andreas at forwards and Koran Zehnder and Bob Raber at guards.

The main problem confronting the Corsairs, in addition to the fine Buck squad, is a week-long layoff.  Killbuck Head Coach Virgil Allison will go with Jerry Allison and Bill Norris at forwards, with Roger McDowell at center and Claude and Bob Arnold at guards.
