DOVER - With the largest opening night crowd in its 18-year history jamming Memorial Hall, the Tuscarawas County Class B League Basketball Tournament got under way last night with the Strasburg Tigers furnishing the main attraction by upsetting the Bolivar Cardinals, while the Midvale Blue Devils, Tuscarawas Broncos and Gnadenhutten Indians also came through in the 1st round of games.

The Strasburg Tigers (1-0) (47-9), dark horse of the tournament, dropped the Bolivar Cardinals (0-1) (23-19), co-champions of the League into the Consolation Division with a 35-32 defeat, the 2nd administered Bolivar by the Tigers within a week.  Last Friday the Burger cagers robbed the Cardinals of an undisputed League Championship by defeating Bolivar 41-24.

But the Strasburg victory wasn't the only thrill the 1,600 fans saw during the evening.  Midvale swept over the Port Washington Purple Riders by 60-23 and Gnaden topped the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 38-24, leaving it to 2nd-year Head Coach Darwin Davis' Mineral City Tigers to furnish the 2nd thriller by losing to Tuscarawas 30-28 in the last 90 seconds of their game.

There were plenty of thrills in the Strasburg-Bolivar game last night, but before the contest was over it developed into a battle between Warren Klink, sensational Cardinal Freshman and the Strasburg team with the Tigers winning on foul tosses.  Freshman guard Warren Klink twisted his way through the Strasburg defense no less than 8 times for short shots to score 16 points and cop scoring honors for the evening.

The Tigers fell behind 5-2 early in the 1st quarter, but before the period was over, the Bengals had piled up a 9-7 lead and they continued to outplay the Cardinals to gain a 17-11 advantage at halftime.  The 3rd stanza saw the Bolivar attack strong then as Klink started his forays through the Tiger defense and when the nets had cooled off at the 3rd period mark the Strasburg lead was cut to 25-24.

Klink's field goal at the start of the final period gave Bolivar a one-point lead, but it was soon swept away when #7 Senior forward Bill Shutt and #9 Senior guard Pete Welsch dropped in 4 free throws and #8 Senior center Fred Yenny a field goal to give Strasburg a 29-26 lead.  The Tigers continued to retain control of the game and was in front 35-28 with 3 minutes remaining when Klink dribbled in for 2 short shots to cut the advantage to 3 points and the Tigers stalled away the last minute.

Yenny led the Strasburg attack with 12 points and Shutt was next with 11 markers, while Klink was high for Bolivar with forward Paul Cushing scoring 7 and center Bud Ross 5.  Strasburg scored 13 action shots and 9 of 13 free throws, while Bolivar scored 15 times from the field, but made only 2 of 7 free throws.  The Cardinals were assessed 12 personals and lost forward Ken Oberlin in the 4th period, while only 6 personals were called on Strasburg.
