40 - Gnaden Defeats Sugarcreek-Shanesville 45-36 (2-23-40)









Gnadenhutten Indians #10 Sophomore center John Metzger won game honors by swishing the nets for 13 Points (6 field goals and a free throw) and leading the Indians to a 45-36 planking of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  Metzger is averaging 11.6 points a game during the tournament.


DOVER - In the Consolation Division, the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-1) (22-22) sent the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-2) (31-19) to the showers and sending them home to regroup for the 1941 season.

The Pirates led the Indians 7-6 at the end of the 1st quarter and was still leading at intermission by a score of 20-18.  But, at the end of the 3rd period Gnadenhutten had scored 11 points and their defense held the Creekers to 9 points which tied the score 29-29.  In the 4th and final stanza, the Indians went on to win going away on a streak of sharp-shooting as Sugarcreek-Shanesville's attack bogged down.  Gnaden outscored the Pirates 16 to 7 during this period.

Metzger led the Indian attack with 13 points, while teammate, #7 Junior forward Dallas Crites, ran his total markers to 12.  Number 6 forward Earl Smith, who did not start the game because of illness, led the Pirates with 10 points.
