40 - 18th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball League Tournament (1940)

DOVER - The basketball wares of 8 of the 11 teams in the 18th Tuscarawas County Class B League Basketball Tournament will be put on display at Memorial Hall here tomorrow night where the 1st card of games in the tournament is staged.  With chips down and every quintet fighting to cling to the spark of life that means qualification for the Northern Ohio Sectional Class B Basketball Tournament 2 weeks hence, the 8 teams will tangle in 4 games, the 1st to start at 7PM and one following each hour.

The Bolivar Cardinals and Strasburg Tigers, one the co-champion of the League and the other...Strasburg...the Champion who couldn't repeat, but one that is definitly a threat to the tournament aspiration of any team it meets, take the limelight on the 1st night's slate.  The 2 teams playing the final game on the program and their contest is not scheduled to start until 10PM.  Previously this season the teams have clashed twice, at Bolivar in a non-league game which the Cardinals took in easy fashion and then at Strasburg in a League tilt which Strasburg won and by so doing forced Bolivar to the long way 'round to gain a one-third share of the League Pennant.

The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Midvale Blue Devils grabbed off the other 2 places of the circuit pennant, but the Pirates don't make their tournament entrance until Saturday afternoon when they meet the Baltic Eagles.  Midvale starts the 1st game Friday night, meeting the Port Washington Purple Riders in the opener.  The Mineral City Tigers and Tuscarawas Broncos play the 2nd game with the Stone Creek Golden Panthers and Gnadenhutten Indians following them to the boards.

The Dundee Bulldogs, like Sugasrcreek-Shanesville, doesn't play until Saturday and with its appearance winds up the entrance of the League teams.  The Bulldogs, who drew one of the byes in the bracket, meet the winner of the Port Washington-Midvale game.

Saturday's games start at 1PM with the 2nd at 2PM and the 1st game of the Consolation ends up filling out the program at 3PM.  The tournament will qualify its winner, runner-up and Consolation winner for the Sectional meeting which will open at Memorial Hall on March 1st.  Programs for the county meeting, an ambitious 22 page booklet, were delivered yesterday and trophies for the winner are expected to arrive this week.  They will be placed on exhibition at Ress Bros. with pictures of the various teams.

Officials for the joust will be a brother team of F.T. Dirodis and Valley Dirodis of Ravenna.  P.O. Cochran of Midvale, J.C. Wilson of Stone Creek, Joseph Zack of Mineral City and G.W. Jeandrevin of Strasburg will be timers.  Harnold Everett of Tuscarawas, L.A.Arrington of Port Washington, Karl W. Mustger of Bolivar and G.E. Shumaker of Baltic will be scorers.

A.C. Bahler, Superintendent of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Schools is manager of the event which last year drew its biggest crowd and biggest gate.  He is serving his 3rd consecutive year in the position.  A total of 4,998 paid admissions for the event a year ago.
