Midvale Blue Devils #13 Forward Frank Morrison receives game honors on his 12 points (5 field goals and 2 free throws) while leading his team to victory over the Millersburg Knights 33-23. So far in tournament play, Morrison has a total of 50 points giving him an average of 10 points per game.
DOVER - Featured by the defeat of Gnadenhutten's crippled Indians at the hands of the Berlin Blue Jays, crack Holmes County entry, the Class B Sectional Tournament got under way at Memorial Hall last night with Berlin and Midvale, Tuscarawas County Champions, earning the right to meet each other on Saturday night at 8PM in the qualifying round.
Berlin staged a big last period rally to top Gnaden 32-29 and Midvale sent the Millersburg Knights home 33-23 in last night's 1st round games as a crowd of 617 paid customers partly filled the hall. However, the crowd was the largest 1st night attendance in several years, Tournament Manager D.C. Lemmon said.
The Midvale Blue Devils (5-0)(21-3), led by #13 forward Frank Morrison with 12 points, had little trouble with Millersburg and led by 8-3 in the 1st period, 18-7 by halftime and 29-16 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Midvale's 7th-year Head Coach M.R. Helwick's team appears to be the favorite in their clash with Berlin Saturday night, winner of the game qualifying for the District Tournament finals at Dennison.
Officiating by Fred Pierson of Tiltonsville and Orville Edmundson of Bridgeport drew many boos from the crow during the evening, especially in the Midvale contest when the pair assessed a Midvale player a technical foul for objecting to a personal foul.
Morrison of the Blue Devils hit the nets for 12 points and no other player on the team was in double figures. The Knights were led by forwards Leppia and Stafford with 8 points each.
