40 - Fire At Memorial Hall

DOVER - There almost wasn't any basketball tournament at memorial Hall last Saturday and only quick work on the part of C.E. Sherrett saved the Hall's floor from serious damage by fire.

Sherrett Saturday morning was sweeping up a pile of newspapers, torn into confetti by the big crowd Friday night and had a neat pile brushed into the center of the floor.  He was sweeping at the end of the floor when his son, Merle, shouted and Sherrett turned around to find the papers ablaze.

He and his assistants rushed to the spot, piled the burning paper into a box and rushed it off the floor to a doorway where it was extinguished.  It was believed that someone had dropped a match and that when Sherrett shoved the paper to the center of the floor the match was ignited and the paper caught on fire.  The playing floor was slightly scorched, but damage was hardly noticeable after Sherrett brushed it down with steel wool.

Saturday's tournament crowd figured 360 paid admissions in the afternoon and about 750 in the evening, according to Tournament Manager A.C. Bahler of Sugarcreek, who said that attendance figures are slightly above last year.  Friday night there were 1,400 paid admissions, the largest crowd to attend an opening night.
