38 - Tusky Eliminates Stone Creek 37-26 (2-19-38)

DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers, Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, Baltic Eagles and Bolivar Cardinals...they're all that's left of the 11 county Class B League basketball teams that started through the brackets toward the county championship and The Daily Reporter Trophy in the 16th Annual Tournament at Memorial Hall last Friday night.  And this coming Friday they'll clash in a pair of games that will boil the 4 down to 2, the latter clashing Saturday night for the coveted honor.

Baltic entered the semi-final bracket last Friday night with an upset victory over the Midvale Blue Devils.  The other 3 made the semi-finals in games Saturday, played before some 400 fans in the afternoon and before a huge and colorful crowd of 1,300 at night.

The Stone Creek Panthers, Dundee Bulldogs and Port Washington Purple Riders bade goodbye to the county's Class B Tournament at Memorial Hall Saturday when they were eliminated from the Consolation Divison which qualifies the 3rd of the tournament teams for the Sectional meeting here on March 4 and 5.  Stone Creek was eliminated 37-26 by the Tuscarawas Broncos, Dundee fell 43-17 before Midvale and Port was ousted 31-19 by the Mineral City Tigers.

Winners of Saturday's games return to the Hall this Friday and Saturday to play off the remainder of the games and the 2 teams entering the finals will clash as a preliminary to the regular tournament final Saturday night.

In the last Consolation game on Saturday night, the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-1) (10-17) played cat and mouse with the Stone Creek Panthers (0-2) (4-11) in the 1st half of the game and then out scored the Panthers in the 2nd half.

The Broncos rushed to end the 1st quarter with 7 points, while the Panthers were right behind them with 6 markers.  In the 2nd quarter Tusky improved abit by leading by 4 points, while again Stone Creek was close-by at 16-12.  By the 3rd quarter the Broncos quickly put some space between them and the Panthers when the scoreboard read 37-16.  Tuscarawas continued their assult on Stone Creek by scoring an additional 11 points sewing up the victory.

The Tuscarawas triumph was led by Senior center Chuck Cardani hitting 14 points and his teammate Junior forward Earl Johnson collecting an additional 12 markers.  Forward Ed Lorenz, who scored a whopping 23 points against the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, hunted down 16 points picking up game honors.  The rest of the Panthers could only gather up an additional 10 points in their team output of 26 markers.
