38 - Baltic Trips-Up Midvale In "Sudden Death" OT 31-29 (2-18-38)

Baltic Eagles Senior Forward Adrian "Andy" Gerber ripped the cords for 9 markers in leading his team in an upset of the Midvale Blue Devils 31-29 in "Sudden Death" overtime.

Baltic Eagles Senior Forward Harry Regula also contributed to the upset of Midvale by sharing Eagle honors with Gerber when he swished the cords for another 9 points.

DOVER - The Baltic Eagles (1-0) (13-18), trial horse of the county's Class B League throughout the League race closed a week ago, stole the show of the opening sessions of the League's 16th Annual Tournament at Memorial Hall last night by upsetting the highly touted Midvale Blue Devils (0-1) (21-12) 31-29 in a "sudden death" overtime period.

In other games last night, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates trimmed the Mineral City Tigers 57-25, while the Strasburg Tigers walloped the Port Washington Purple Riders 55-12 and the Gnadenhutten Indians defeated the Dundee Bulldogs 47-28.  Play in the clash was to resume today at 1PM with 3 games and continue tonight with 3 more.  The 1st of the later sessions starting at 7PM.

Final contest on a 4-hour program that drew a crowd of nearly 1,000 fans, Baltic's upheaval of the defending Class B Champions of the Eastern Ohio District provided the tournament with its 1st display of "dog-eat-dog" competition that is expected to make this year's tournament one of the hottest in history.

Baltic's victory last night, scored on a basket tossed by Senior forward Harry Regula from near the center of the floor during the 1st minute of play in overtime, advances the Eagles to the semi-final round where next Friday they play the winner of the Bolivar Cardinals-Tuscarawas Broncos game.

Baltic, playing with determination found only in tournaments, jumped to an early lead on Midvale and remained out front until their attack bogged down in the final quarter and the Blue Devils came from behind to tie the score at 29-all just before the regulation playing time ended.

Led by Senior forward Adrian "Andy" Gerber and Harry Regula, the Eagles took an 8-0 lead before Midvale scored and then went on to lead 10-4 at the close of the 1st stanza.  They outscored Midvale 10-9 in the 2nd period and led 20-13 at the halftime intermission.  Baltic started to slip in the 3rd period when the Blue Devils seeming to lack a vital passing and clever floor work, scored on even terms with both teams collecting 6 points.

Then came the final quarter when Midvale outscored its rivals 10-3 with Baltic's only points being a foul by Harry Regula and a basket by Senior guard Don Huprich.  The 2 teams started a 3-minute overtime period when Harry Regula's shot ended the game.  The same Regula missed a chance to end the game in the regular playing time when he missed a free throw with only 3 seconds remaining.  He and Gerber each scored 9 points.  Center Bill Stevenson of Midvale had game honors by hitting the nets for 15 points.

Ben Schreimer of Gnadenhutten, Bob Stevenson of Barnhill and Ken Glasgow of New Philadelphia refereed the games, working in 2-man shifts.
