38 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Win 16th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (2-26-38)

The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' County Class B Tournament Champions, the season's most outstanding basketball team, is pictured above as it gathered around the trophy table at Memorial Hall Saturday night to claim 2 trophies and gold basketballs.  Superintendent A.C. Bahler and Head Coach Earl Sundheimer are on the left, while the players without jackets are the 5 regulars.

The Baltic Eagles with their Head Coach L.P. Wartiainen stepped to the front at Memorial Hall to claim the runner-up award...the highest their school has ever received in a county tournament.  The Eagles rated only fair were the tournament's surprise team, upsetting both the Bolivar Cardinals and Midvale Blue Devils in close games, but were too tired to give Sugarcreek-Shanesville a hard battle in the final game.

The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Forward Marne Blick led his team by pouring in a total of 23 points (10 field goals and 3 free throws) in cruising to a 48-25 victory over the Baltic Eagles and claiming the 16th Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Tournament for their 3rd Championship since the tournament began in 1923.

Forward Don Shepfer, Captain of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' Class B Basketball Tournament Champions, is presented the winner;'s trophy by Mayor Earl S. Lieser after his team's 48-25 victory over Baltic in the finals at Memorial Hall Saturday night.  Shepfer is the only veteran on the Pirates squad.  The trophy was donated by The Daily Reporter.

DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates' "wonder team," Baltic's upsetting Eagles and Strasburg's County League Champions were being groomed today for the Sectional Tournament here this weekend after fighting their way through the county tournament which ended at Memorial Hall on Saturday night.  Of the 3 teams, the Pirates were by far the most outstanding in tournament play and then Championship 48-25 victory over the badly fatigue Baltic crew left little for the Sugarcreek-Shanesville fans to desire.

On the other hand, the Strasburg Tigers' 46-34 victory over the Midvale Blue Devils in the Consolation tournament finals kept the Tigers in the Sectional race after an upset Friday night at the hands of Sugarcreek-Shanesville.

The Sugarcreek crew, a well-balanced team with a tall center and forward and 3 little speed merchants, climaxed a season of steady improvement Friday night with a 29-25 victory over Strasburg and then coasted through Saturday night's final game.  Head Coach Earl Sundheimer of Sugarcreek-Shanesville last November looked forword to a mediocre team, but found instead that he had in the making one of those unusually well-balanced clubs, which work with close precision and are practically unbeatable.

In addition to that he found a sharpshooter in forward Marne "Blick" Blickensderfer who went through the year averaging around 15 points a game and in the 4 tournament games piled up a total of 68 points, an average of 17 points a game, to beat Frank Baumholtz's 59 point total in 4 Midvale games last year.

That perhaps may be the reason Head Coach L.P. Wartiainen's Baltic Eagles, who played their hearts out Friday night to take a 30-24 victory over Bolivar's Cardinals were unable to rally again Saturday night and withstand Sugarcreek-Shanesville's fast attack.

The Baltic Eagles (2-1) (14-19) plalyed uncertain ball and missed dozens of shots as the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-0) (28-15) piled up a 14-3 lead in the 1st period...went in front 26-11 at the half and held Baltic to a lone field goal in the 3rd period to lead 36-13.

The Eagles never did get going and Dick Regula was the only player on their team to play anything near an average game.  He turned in 11 points.  While Baltic was desperately trying to display some of its Friday night form, Blickensderfer was potting shots for the Pirates and ended up with a grand total of 23 points and game honors.  Guard Phil Hostetler followed with 5 classy field goals for 10 points.

Ken Glasgow of New Philadelphia, Ben Senniner of Gnadenhutten and Russ Stevensonof Barnhill officiated at all games during lthe tournament.
