38 - Strasburg Eakes-Out Win Over Philo 30-29 (3-10-38)

Strasburg Tigers Senior Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell led the Tigers with 11 points (5 field goals and a free throw) while collecting game honors in a very close victory over the Philo Electrics 39-29.

DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers (8-1), Tuscarawas County's only entry in the Class B list narrowly missed an upset fate in its contest with the Philo Electrics of Muskingum County, the Tigers coming out 30-29...by the very skin of their teeth.  The victory qualified the Tigers for the finals of their class tomorrow night.  Strasburg will meet the winner of tonight's Class B semi-final between the Berlin Hawks of Holmes County and Hopewell of Muskingum County.

Getting off to one of those slow starts which characterized their play in the county tournament, Head Coach Paul M. Roby's Burgers went scoreless in the 1st 6 minutes of play, while the Philo crew piled up a 6-0 lead and appeared capable of turning back the powerful Tiger quintet.  The Tigers rallied in the last 2 minutes of the quarter; however, and drummed up 6 points on 2 baskets by Senior forward John Miller and one by Senior guard Charles "Babe" Reiger.  The Electrics; meanwhile, was keeping pace and held a 12-6 lead at the end of the period.  Philo's violations of the rules and the resultant free throws put the Tigers back in the game in the 2nd period when they outscored the Muskingum County team 6-3 and moved up to within 3 points of the leaders at the halftime intermission.  Strasburg tallied 4 free throws and one field goal...the latter by Reiger, during this period.

Led by Senior forward "Pete" Haswell, the Tigers made their big bid in the 3rd period when they finally settled down and stasrted to play ball.  Haswell looped 4 field goals and a free throw through the hoop.  Reiger tossed a free throw and a field goal and Miller and Senior guard Bob Deibel each contributed a free throw as the Tigers moved out front, tallying 13 points to Philo's 5 and taking a 26-20 lead as the period ended.

Strasbrug went to its total score of 30 points early in the final quarter and then spent most of its efforts staving off Philo's stretch sprint.  Failure of which was due largely to the missing of 4 free tosses and the relaxation of one player when he was in line for an easy sucker shot on a fast break play...the latter came just before the end of the game when the score stood at 30-29.  The player was "asleep" and the arrival of the ball from the other end of the floor woke him up, but his fumbling enabled "Babe" Reiger to arrive on the scene and spoil the shot.  Reiger, too, had been caught napping.

Haswell's scoring in the 3rd period carried him to scoring honors with 11 points, while Miller and Reiger each collect 7 markers.  Center Brannon and guard M. Johnson led the Philo attack, also with 7 points each.
