34 - Mineral City Tigers Wins 1st Annual Consolation Tournament (2-24-34)

DOVER - The Mineral City Tigers (3-1)(5-12) is the 1st Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball team to win the Consolation Tournament as they upset the highly regarded Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-2) (17-10) by a score of 17-16. Poor free throw shooting, a trait that has manifested itself as ne of the Pirates' towering weaknesses more times than one this season, can be directly blamed for the 2nd upset suffered by Sugarcreek-Shanesville.  Missing 8 of 10 free tosses, the Pirates lost the chance to attend the Sectional Tournament here next week by losing to Mineral City in the Consolation final on Saturday night.  The records show the Pirates scored 7 times from the field to 8 for the Tigers and cashed in on only 2 free throws, while Mineral City hit 1 of 3 free chances.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville committed only 2 personal fouls in the entire game.

After the Tigers took a 6-3 lead in the opening period, the Pirates tied the score at 10-all at the half and kept it knotted at 14-14 as the final period started.  Frank Scott, sure-eyed Mineral City forward, won scoring honors by potting 5 field goals for 10 points.  Junior forward Prince Harmon of Sugarcreek-Shanesville was 2nd high with 8 points on 4 field goals.  Senior center Sylvester Miller of the Pirates and guard Dick Wilson of the Tigers each marked 4 points each.
