34 - Midvale Upsets Sugarcreek-Shanesville 33-24 (2-17-34)

DOVER - An early season defeat at the hands of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (1-1) (14-9) and the fact that the Pirates had finished in the runner-up position in the County League meant exactly nothing to the Midvale Blue Devils (2-0) (10-5) Saturday night.  Refusing to be awed by the presence of the Pirates and with practically no respect for records the Devils proceeded in a very business-like manner to turn in the season's biggest Class B upset in the county by shunting Sugarcreek-Shanesville down the Consolation Tournament sidetrack.  Led by forward Frank Cox who tallied 12 points, Midvale turned in a 33-24 victory after leading throughout the game.  They were ahead 5-2 at the quarter, 12-6 at the half and 21-18 at the 3rd quarter mark.

Under Midvale's withering running attack the Pirates seemed unable to settle down or to counter with one of their scoring sprees they have won fame for.  Senior Dean "Squirt" Norris, rangy guard, was high point man for the Pirates with 5 field goals and one free throw for 11 points.  Zeke Zechiel, regular Sugarcreek-Shanesville guard, was put out of the game in the final period on personals.  Junior Joe Dragovich (5-11), Midvale guard, met a similar fate a play or two later.
