26 - Strasburg Just Gets By Dundee 19-14 (2-26-26)







DOVER - Eight Tuscarawas County Class B basketball quintets got into action on  the American Legion basketball court Saturday morning in the preliminaries to the Tuscarawas Class B cage tornament.  Gnadenhutten, Sugarcreek-Shanesville, Bolivar and Strasburg were the winners in the morning sessions.  Gnadenhutten defeated Mineral  City in  the 1st game by the scoreof 20-14.  In the 2nd game, Sugarcreek-Shanesville whipped Tuscarawas High School cagers 29-14.  Bolivar High School trounced Baltic in the 3rd morning contest 45-3.  In the final  preliminary, Strasburg had a hard time defeating the Dundee high floormen 19-14.

Saturday afternoon the Gnadenhutten Indians and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates were in one of the semi-final contests, while the Bolivar Cardinals and the Strasburg Tigers were to battle it out in the second.  Tonight beginning at 7:30 the winners of the afternoon games will play the finals for the right to represent their respective schools in the District Class B Tournament to be held later in  March at Cambridge.  Approximately 200 persons attended the morning games and they were expected to see the afternoon games that started at 2PM.

The Dundee Bulldogs basketmen (0-1) (0-4) almost upset the dope bucket in the final game of the morning when they played the Strasburg Tigers (1-0) (7-2) almost to a standstill and came within 5 points of beating the favorites.  Senior forward Ed Wyss hit for 5 field goals for a total of 10 points to lead Strasburg.  Junior guard Walter Neidenthal picked up another 3 points, a field goal and a foul shot, while Seniors Delbert Gordon, Luke Warnes and Glen Jones all had 2 points each.  Leading the Dundee team in scoring was Sophomore forward Lester Price who hit for 7 points, 3 field goals and a foul shot.  Senior center Roy Baker followed that with 2 field goals for 4 points, while Glen Wilds and Walton Olinger had 2 and 1 points, respectively.  The Dundee Bulldogs have yet to bring in a victory in tournament play in 4 tries.
