41 - Tuscarawas Basketball Tournament (TBT) Talks

DOVER - Task of distributing the "booty" to schools in the Class B Tournament fell to County School Supt. W.E. Laws and he found a quiet and orderly crowd watching as he handed out the glistening trophies.  The Championship Trophy, donated by The Daily Reporter, went to the Midvale Blue Devils and Captain Jerry "Buzzy" Young; the Runner-up Trophy, donated by the Dover Branch of the Sanitary Milk Company, went to the Dundee Bulldogs and Captain Victor "Vic" Smith; the Consolation Division Championship Trophy, donated by the S. Toomey Company, went to the Gnadenhutten Indians and Captain Ken Kohl.

In addition, the winners each received individual gold medals, donated by Walter E. Leiser Inc. and the game ball used in the final game was donated by the Godfrey Electric Company, while the Runner-ups received silver medals, donated by the Marsh Wall Products.  The League Trophy, donated by E. Fienberg & Company went to the Bolivar Cardinals and Captain Bud Ross, while the Sportsmanship Trophy, donated by The Daily Times, went to the Tuscarawas Broncos following a meeting of the coaches and officials.  Each of the Captains made a short speech over the "mike" and they were short too.

Midvale is building itself an imposing record in the county tournament.  Saturday night's 2nd consecutive Championship was the 3rd on the Blue Devils record and in addition, Midvale has been runner-up 3 times and Consolation winner twice.  Last year the team won the Eastern Ohio Dictrict Tournament at Dennison and went on to Columbus losing its 2nd game there.

Dundee made its best appearance in the tournament in the history of the school, despite the fact that it lost the final game.  In 1934 the Bulldogs lost the Championship to the Mighty Strasburg Tigers 60-19 and in 1928 they lost it to the same team 22-6.

Let's now remind school officials to make a check-up next year and prepare an authentic record of the tournaments.  This year's tourney was supposed to be the 17th, but in reality was the 19th, a check through the files showing the joust started in 1923.  Also, there are mistakes in printed programs as to who won the tournaments during the years it was played.

Upsets in the tournament this year were a matter of course because all teams were fairly evenly matched except for Midvale which came through with a last-of-season rush and which appears to be improving rapidly all the time.  Dundee, which lost many games by a few points this year, reached the tourney finals by dropping Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates 30-27 and Strasburg 33-29, while Midvale trounced Bolivar 34-26 and Gnaden 37-21.  The Indians, after losing to Midvale, turned around and eliminated the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 25-22 and then copped their 2nd straight Consolation Division Title by edging Strasburg.  Gnadenhutten has won the regular title once, in 1930 and were runner-up in 1931.

The financial statement of the tournament, to be made by Tournament Manager Harold Everett of Tuscarawas, is expected to show attendance at a lower figure than it was last year.  The final night's crowd was composed of 665 adults and 516 children as compared with a final night crowd of 832 adults and 537 children last year.
