41 - Midvale Brings-Down Cridersville 30-23 (3-21-41)

Midvale Blue Devils Forward Adrian Ford scored 12 points...wins game honors...and led his team to a 2nd straight upset...this time against the Cridersville Rams by a score of 30-23.  Adrian Ford has amassed 114 points in tournament play with an average of 12.6 points per game.

COLUMBUS - A shrewd, fast-thinking and hard fighting Midvale Blue Devils (9-0) (21-5) eliminated a giant and highly-favored Cridersville Rams team from the State Class B Tournament by a score of 30-23 before 7,507 screaming fans to enter the semi-finals against a fleet, high scoring Canfield Cardinals team...runner-up in the 1940 tournament.  The Cardinals advanced into the semi-final round by dropping the Hanover Panthers 48-42 dispite the 31-point spree of Hanover's big center, Ed Flowler.  In the other semi-finals today, Glenford was to meet Xenia.

With little forward Calvin "Tod" Hostetler leading the way with a dazzling display of ball stealing and sensational passing the Midvale Five grabbed a 10-5 lead at the start of the 1st quarter and was never headed the remainder of the game.  The Blue Devils held a lead of 16-13 at intermission and 26-20 at the end of the 3rd stanza mark, outscoring the favored Cridersville team in the 1st, 3rd and 4th periods and holding them even in the 2nd.

While Hostetler himself accounted for only 2 points, he passed off many baskets, feeding teammates for better range.  Midvale bottled up the Cardinals' great center...Roger Phillips...most of the game and held him to 11 points.  One of the few times he has been kept out of the twenties this season, only the night before he had set a new scoring record of 33 points in a tournament victory over previously unbeaten Fairfield of Columbus County.

Head Coach Pete Wolfe, the Midvale mentor, accomplished the impossible feat of stopping Phillips with a bit of strategy as has been shown in either the Class B or Class A meet thus far.  He had Forward Dale Ford plaguing Phillips around the front line and then when the big record breaking center moved into the pivot position in the center of the Midvale zone defense, "Ace" Adrian Ford and guard Jerry "Buzzy" Young took him over.  Ford played in front of him and Young took a stance at his side.

The result was an almost total "blackout" so far as the Cridersville team was concerned and completely stopped Phillips' favorite shot...jump-heave from close-in.  So well guarded was the star in the pivot that he left it near the close of the 2nd period and then left it for keeps throughout the final quarter contending himself with long shots over the Midvale defense.  Meanwhile, Adrian Ford who was lined up at forward last night, was collecting enough field goals to garner 12 points, led the Blue Devils offense and copped individual honors.  Captain Young scored 9 points for the victors.
