41 - Tuscarawas Basketball Tournament (TBT) Talks

DOVER - The Dundee Bulldogs will be seeking their 1st county tournament...this in the 19th year history of the playoff tomorrow night when they meet Midvale, which will be seeking their 3rd title and the 2nd in a row.  Dundee reached the finals of the county tournament in 1934 when Glen Jones was Head Coach, finished as runner-up and then went on to the Sectional Tournament losing out in the 1st game.  Midvale won the tournament last year, went on to cop the District Tournament Title at Dennison and won the 1st game in the State finals at Columbus.  The Blue Devils defeated Dundee 30-22 in January.

The Strasburg Tigers have a good alibi for last night's defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs.  Dundee got off to a whirlwind start in the 1st period when forward Milton Fruchey scored 8 points on 4 field goals, but someone forgot to turn all the lights on.  The Bulldogs shooting fell off when the entire lighting system came on and Strasburg started to show offensive strength, but Dundee had enough left to kill the Tiger rally.

One of the annual headaches to sports writers is the All-Tournament selections and this year will be no exception.  Try once and see if you yourself can pick 5 players who will meet with even your best friend's approval as the cream of the nearly 100 players appearing in the tournament.

Elmer Sherrett, Memorial Hall janitor, can't go through a tournament without having to make an official appearance before the crowd.  Last night it was a faulty net which caused the Midvale-Gnaden game to be held up for several minutes, while officials summoned Sherrett and his stepladder.  But, it was quickly and capably done when Sherrett was finally reached.

Tournament Manager Harold Everett is calling special attention to the fact that the doors of the gymnasium open at 6:30 both tonight and tomorrow night and that games start at 7:30 each night.  If you're looking for a seat Saturday night it might be a good idea to be on hand early for the trophies and medals will be handed out after the final 2 games that night.

BUZZ - Head Coach Syl Harmon of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates hung the Midvale sign on the scoreboard for the Blue Devils game...the Dundee-Strasburg tilt caused the 1st second guessing of the referees, Valley and Francis Dirodis...Baltic's one-armed player, Bob Regula, who lost the limb in a hunting accident, got in the Bolivar game in the last minute...Head Coach Dutch Furbay and his assistant of Dennison and Head Coach Paul Hoernermann and Faculty Manager Deo Sieffen of New Philadelphia were in the press box...the scoreboard on the southwest side of the hall was wrong several times...the All-County Band opened with the "Star Spangled Banner" again...Biggest question asked last night:  "How good are the Berlin Blue Jays and the Walnut Creek Cardinals from Holmes County?
