41 - Midvale Squeaks Out a 44-41 Win Over Philo (3-14-41)

Midvale Blue Devils Guard Adrian Ford wins game honors setting the nets on fire with 16 points (5 field goals and 6 free throws) while leading the Blue Devils to a 44-41 victory over the Philo Electrics in a District Tournament contest where Midvale led all the way.  Ford now has 73 points in tournament play.  He has a average of 12.3 points per game.

DENNISON - A pair of Blue Devil teams, the Midvale Blue Devils in Class B and the Zanesville Blue Devils in Class A came out of the 2nd round of semi-final games in the Eastern Ohio District Scholastic Basketball Tournament in Dennison last night with tickets punched for the Championship games today and tonight.  Carrying the torch for 15 other Tuscarawas County teams that have fallen by the wayside since the tournament season opened 4 weeks ago, Head Coach Pete Wolfe's Midvale combination downed the Philo Electrics 44-41 last night, while Zanesville ran over Barnesville 60-37.  A crowd of nearly 1,000...897 of them cash customers...saw the game.

Midvale plays the Warsaw Eagles of Coshocton County at 3:30PM this afternoon for the District Class B Championship...now held by the Midvale Blue Devils...and a trip to the finals at Columbus next week.  Midvale had a narrow squeak last night and depended for victory on a 6-point lead carefully built up during the 1st 3 quarters; although, the summary shows the Wolfemen's margin of victory to have been scored at the free throw line.  But they were tough there and sank 14 of 19 shots, while Philo hit only 9 of 21.

The 6-point lead the Midvale Blue Devils (6-0) (18-5) held at the start of the final period looked like a mountain until Philo finally whittled it to practically nothing and guard Adrian Ford and forward Jerry "Buzzy" Young were ejected on personal fouls with 2 minutes remaining.  And right there the Electrics elected to sink a field goal and cut the Blue Devils' lead to just 2 points at 43-41, but the 2 points were to be Philo's last.

Less than a minute remained when guard Vic Paris dropped in another free throw to give the victors their final tally.  The Osbournemen of Head Coach Ray Osbourne missed a scoring chance in the last 10 seconds when guard W. Fitz missed a free toss.  Midvale had taken an 11-8 lead in the 1st quarter, doubled the points in the 2nd period, which ended 22-17 and then attached another 13 points in the 3rd stanza to outscore Philo 35 to 29.

Fine floor work by Young and a 2nd-half spurt by Adrian Ford sparked the Midvale attack.  Ford collected 2 field goals in each of the last 2 quarters which added to his 8 points and had matched that in the 1st half for a total of 16 points.  Young tallied 13 points right behind him.  Forward Gilmore, Philo sharpshooter whose long distance firing in the 1st half kept the Electrics in the game collected 9 points, but Captain W. Fitz tickled the hoops with 7 in the final stanza to lead the Philo surge and capture individual honors for the team with 11 markers.
