36 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Ambushes Lore City 48-24 (3-13-36)

DENNISON - Tuscarawas County today was assured of one entry in the State scholastic basketball finals at Columbus next week and had a chance to send 2 as the Eastern Ohio District qualifying tournament at Dennison reached the semi-final State with 8 teams remaining in the race for the 4 capital prizes.  The one sure county entry was in the Class B Division where the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (6-1) thumped the Lore City Blue Streaks 48-21 and the Dennison Railroaders will meet the Pirates tonight for a chance at the District Title and the Columbus trip.

The Pirates' victory over the Blue Streaks was marked up in a business-like way which saw Sugarcreek-Shanesville take the lead in the opening period and then pot instantly at the hoop to keep their opponents on the short end.  The Pirates had little trouble in breaking up the Lore City attack and consistently took possession of the ball after the latter took one shot at the bucket.  At their own end of the floor Sugarcreek-Shanesville usually had 3 or 4 shots and usually scored before the turnover.

The Pirates led 16-9, 29-16 and 36-23 at the period ends with 4 of their starting 5 tallying at least 10 points.  Paul Andreas, center, had a high of 13 points (5 field goals and 3 free throwa) for game honors.  Senior forward Dallas Hamsher hit the hoops for another 12 points (5 field goals and 2 free throws), while Juniors forward Cliff Moomaw and guard John Harmon followed with 10 points each (5 field goals and 3 field goals and 4 free throws).  Guards J. Stahoec and L. Stahoec led Lore City with 9 points (4 field goals and a free throw) and 6 points (3 field goals).
