The Strasburg Tigers Sophomore Forward Paul "Pete" Haswell, in a losing effort against the Midvale Blue Devils, lost 26-24 and managed to lead his team with 11 points.
DOVER - If the Regular Championship game between the Bolivar Cardinals and Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates tonight is forced into a backseat, it would have to be the superior and brilliant basketball play of the Consolation game between the Strasburg Tigers (3-2) (35-8) and the Midvale Blue Devils (3-1) (17-10). Both teams worked the ball well around the floor and wasted no time on wild flings. It was touch-and-go from the starting whistle and neither team ever held a commanding lead. The Blue Devils led 7-3 at the end of the 1st quarter and 12-11 at halftime, but the teams went into the final period tied at 23-all.
The 3rd period became an individual scoring battle between forward Fred Marshall of Midvale and Sophomore forward Paul "Pete" Haswell of Strasburg. The latter started it at the beginning of the period to give Strasburg a 13-12 lead. Then Marshall hit for his 1st and the two started their pitched battle. It would up with Marshall scoring 4 baskets and Haswell getting 3 in as fine an exhibition as the tournament has offered outside of the demonstrations of the Bolivar Cardinals' Senior center Paul Class. Marshall went out of the game on personal fouls halfway through the 4th stanza, but the 13 points he had racked up were sufficient to hold scoring honors for him. Haswell wound up 2nd with 11 points.
Midvale jumped to a 26-21 lead early in the last period, but the Tigers clipped it down and scored their final points when little more than a minute remained to play.
Midvale also managed to eke out its victory over the Tuscarawas Broncos 22-15 in an afternoon game. The Blue Devils had won 16 straight games before being defeated by the Bolivar Cardinals 30-18, but returned to better form for the Consolation games.
