36 - Midvale County Champions Tops Walnut Creek 26-19 (3-5-36)

DOVER - The Bolivar Cardinals, winners of the Tuscarawas County's Class B Title and the Midvale Blue Devils, County League Champions and Consolation Tournament Champions, will meet again tonight at 9PM when the 2nd round of the Class B Sectional is played at Legion Hall.  The winner of that contest will play the Dennison Railroaders on Saturday at 8PM to decide which will qualify for the District Tournament at Dennison next week.  Thus the line-up of the county's upper bracket entrants stood today following the 1st round of the Sectional Tournament last night.  Midvale eliminated the Walnut Creek Cardinals 26-19 and Dennison had an easy time routing the Millersburg Knights 36-21.

The county's other 2 entrants...the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers and the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates...will play in the lower bracket games tonight.  The Pirates will meet Holmesville at 7PM and the Ramblers will play the highly-touted Delroy Warriors outfit at 8PM.  Winners of those contests will meet Saturday at 9PM to decide which will go to Dennison.

A much larger crowd than the 385 paid admissions last night is anticipated when Bolivar and Midvale clash with Midvale out to avenge a 30-18 loss administered by the Cardinals in the county tournament just last week.  The defeat sent the Blue Devils to the Consolation rounds where it nosed out the Strasburg Tigers 26-24 in the finals for the Consolation Championship.

Guard Delbert Keffer of the Midvale Blue Devils (4-1), scored the 1st point in the Sectional Tournament by making a foul shot in the 1st few minutes of play against the Walnut Creek Cardinals, opening the avenue for 11 points by Junior guard Frank Baumholtz as the Blue Devils came through in the 4th quarter to decide their 26-19 victory over the Cardinals.  The game was rough and tumble with a total of 34 fouls being called by Referees Raymond Scherer of Coshocton and Jimmy Robison of Canton.  Midvale players committed 18 fouls...Walnut Creek 16.

Unable to hit the loop, Walnut Creek fought for 3 quarters to keep abreast of the Midvale sharp-shooters.  And did well.  The score was 5-4 in favor of the Blue Devils at the end of the 1st quarter, 12-8 at halftime and 15-14 at the end of the 3rd period.

Bombarding the Cardinals' territory at will in the last quarter, Midvale, led by Baumholtz and Keffer, tallied 11 points to Walnut Creek's five.  Out of 22 chances at the free-throw line, the Cardinals made nine.  Out of 19 chances, Midvale made eight.  Sent from the game on personals for Midvale in the 3rd quarter were center Jack Walker and forward Fred Marshall, followed in the 4th quarter by Keffer.  Zehnder was the only Walnut Creek player lost.

Baumholtz was the only player in double figures with 11 points (3 field goals and 5 free throws) which was strong enough for game honors.  Walnut Creek was led by forward P. Hershburger who swished for 5 points (2 field goals and a free throw), while his teammate guard Schrock who ringed and 5 points (1 field goal and 3 free throws).
