57 - Tonight's Class A Games

DOVER - One team will fall by the wayside tonight as the double elimination Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament enters its 2nd night of action with one Consolation Division contest and 2 Championship games scheduled.  Competition will be getting tougher as play progresses and tonight's 2 Championship games should be real thrillers, while the consy fracas should also prove a real squeaker.

The Dundee Bulldogs and Tuscarawas Broncos, both losers in the 1st night of play to the Port Washington Purple Riders and Midvale Blue Devils respectively, kickoff the tourney when they meet in the Consolation Division tilt at 6:30.  At 7:45, the Strasburg Tigers, the County League Champions for 5 consecutive years, will display their talents against the dangerous Baltic Eagles.  The Tigers, beaten only by Sandy Valley, have copped 17 victories this year and are ranked 3rd in the State according to this week's Associated Press Poll.  The Eagles, always a dangerous club to play since they have 5 players averaging in double figures, have won 13 of 20 outings this year.  Included in the Flyers victories were wins over the Purple Riders and Blue Devils.

The Bengal cagers will be required to play without their regular coach at their side.  Head Coach Chuck Canifor, ikn his 1st year at the Tiger helm, was called to the Wheeling, West Virginia are on Monday night when his brother-in-law, Edward Louis Youngblood and Youngblood's wife were killed in an auto accident.  Dale McDonald, Head Coach of the football team and Assistant Basketball Coach, will pilot Caniford's charges in his absence.  In the 3rd contest at 9:00, the young, but ever improving Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates take on the sharp shooting Gnadenhutten Indians.

The Pirates, hurt by the loss of 2 veteran players, have recovered sufficiently to pose as a threat to any team in the tournament.  They have won 10 of 20 games this year.  The Indians on the other hand, boasts a top-notch record of 17 wins and only 3 losses and tied with the Stone Creek Golden Panthers for the 2nd spot in the county loop.  The Tribe lost 2 games to Port Washington and one to Strasburg.  Three more games are booked for Thursday night with the Golden Panthers and the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans making their initial appearance.

The Panthers (16-4) take on the Diablos of Midvale and the Trojans (15-4) meet Port in the Championship bracket, while the losers of Wednesday night's games will meet in a Consolation Division tilt.  This week's tournament play will close with 2 Consolation Division games on Saturday night.
