DOVER - With Ed Bates setting 2 new scoring records, the Port Washington Purple Riders blazed to a rousing 106-74 victory over the Baltic Eagles on Saturday night in the Consolation Division bracket of the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament at Dover's Memorial Hall.  In the other consy battle the Midvale Blue Devils romped over the Tuscarawas Broncos to the tune of 89-67 for the 2nd victory over that team in the tournament having defeated them in championship play 97-55.

Bates, who scored 446 points in 18 regular season games for the Purple Riders, continued to set a torrid pace in tournament play and topped both of his previous efforts Saturday night as he tallied an amazing 50 points.  The 6-1 Senior lad sizzled the entire night as he hit from every position on the floor and connected on 21 of 39 action shots.  He also added 8 free throw shots in as many tries in registering the staggering total.

The half century of points snaps 2 scoring marks...one of 43 points in tournament play and the other the Memorial Hall record of 44 points.  Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel of the Strasburg Tigers set the tournament record in 1955 against the Blue Devils, while the Memorial Hall mark was held by the Dover Tornadoe's Jake Lengler who scored 44 points in his Junior year of the 1950-51 season against the Coshocton Indians.  Bates scored 28 points against the Dundee Bulldogs and 32 against the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans in 2 previous tournament tilts last week and with his 50 on Saturday night brings his total to 110 or better than 36 markers per tournament game.

Saturday night's action concluded the 4th round of contests in the tourney with the semi-finals and finals the only remaining games.  Thursday night finalists in the Championship bracket and the other 2 teams in the Consolation Division bracket, will be decided when the Tigers of Strasburg battle the Stone Creek Golden Panthers in the 1st game and the Gnadenhutten Indians square off with the Trojans in the nightcap.  The loser of the 1st game will meet the Diablos, while the 2nd game loser takes on Port on Friday night, while the Championship tussles are on Saturday.

The Port Washington Purple Riders (2-1) (13-8) (27-54) displayed plenty of power as they eliminated a much smaller, but just as skilled, Baltic Eagles (1-2) (14-9) (36-53) from the tournament.  Bates set a steaming pace as he connected for 16 points in the very 1st quarter to give the Purple Riders a 28-19 lead and then added 12 more in the 2nd frame to pace the winners to a 44-35 margin at intermission.

While the Eagles could hit for only 11 points Port Washington chalked ukp 27 points in the 3rd stanza with Ed getting 8 and romped to a big 71-46 lead going into the final canto.  Port added 35 more points in the final quarter as Bates again picked up 14 points, while Baltic scored 28 and the Riders rode to victory.

The Flyers, one of the youngest teams in the county, had a Freshman, Sophomore, 2 Juniors and a Senior on the starting five.  All of the starters hit in double figures with 5-6 Junior guard Ron Huprich leading the way with 17 points and Freshman forward John Rice adding 16.  Sophomore 6-0 forward Sam Jacobs ended with 14 markers, 6-0 Junior center Larry Ladrach 13 and 5-5 Senior guard Glen Reidenbach 10 rounded out the Orange and Black scoring.  Senior guard Denver Glazer followed Bates in the scoring column for the Purple and White with 20 points, while 6-3 Senior center Nick Frank had 16 and Senior guard Jerry Hannahs finished with 15.
