57 - Sectional Tournament Rundown

DOVER - It looks as if the Stone Creek Golden Panthers will have a rough time, while the Gnadenhutten Indians should be a shoo-in when action opens in the Dover Class A Sectional Basketeball Tournament on Wednesday night.  Of the 10 teams which draw for positions at Heimkamps Restaurant here last night, the Golden Panthers and Indians were top seeded on the basis of their 18-5 and 20-3 records respectively.  Gnaden drew the 1st billet and selected the upper bracket and the Panthers the lower with both teams taking bye positions.

The 4 teams in the lower bracket with Stone Creek are the Killbuck Bucks (10-10), Midvale Blue Devils (13-10), Walnut Creek Cardinals (14-6) and the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers (10-8).  The 4 upper bracket teams with the Gnadenhutten Indians are the Millersburg Knights (10-8), Dennison Railroaders (3-14), Augusta Blue Devils (12-6) and Dennison St. Mary Blue Waves (8-10).  The Knights, exempted village of Holmes County, opens action at 7:30 Wednesday evening against the Railroaders, exempted village of this county, while in a nightcap the Bucks, runner-up in the Holmes County League Tournament, takes on the Blue Devils of Midvale, Consolation Division winner of this county's tournament at 8:45.

On Thursday night the Ramblers will face a stiff test when they battle the Cardinals, winner of the Holmes County Tournament, at 8:45.  In the 1st game the Blue Waves, the other parochial school in this county which automatically gets berths in the Sectional Tournament, clashes with the Blue Devils of Augusta at 7:30.  Gnadenhutten meets the winner of the Dennison-Millersburg tussle at 7:30 on Friday night, while Stone Creek squares off with the Midvale-Killbuck winner at 8:45.

On Saturday night the winners of the Thursday and Friday evening games, in their respective brackets, vie for the 2 berths in the Dover Class A District Tournament slated to start on March 6th.  The Midvale Blue Devils picked the lower bracket with the Stone Creek Golden Panthers rather than the upper slot with Gnaden.  The Blue Devils, who will be favored to defeat Killbuck, will have to battle the Golden Panthers.  Head Coach Ed McGlumphy's cagers own 2 victories over the Midvale quintet this year.  The 1st an easy 69-58 verdict, while the 2nd, in play, a 70-67 squeaker.

Augusta could give the Gnaden cagers the most trouble since they are boasting the best record in the upper bracket other than the seeded Indians.  Head Coach Joe La Scola, also steering away from Gnaden, picked up the lower bracket and Walnut Creek defeated the Ramblers by a lopsided 102-52 score early in the season.  But the Ramblers will have to be marked as the "Dark Horse" in the tournament on the basis of their over-all improvement at the end of the regular season.

Gnadenhutten will definitely be the favorite in the upper bracket, while in the lower bracket it will be a toss-up between all 5 teams since 4 of them are boasting winning records and the 5th a .500 mark.  In the upper bracket only Millersburg and Augusta have winning records.
