57 - Gnaden Free Throws Downs TV 79-74 (2-121-57)

Senior 6-0 Guard Dave Jo Wolf of Bolivar (12) is shown taking a jump shot which was good to put the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans 4 points ahead in the final canto last night.  The Trojans eventually faltered and the Gnadenhutten Indians snared the victory.  Senior 5-7 Guard Larry Clark (33) and Junior 5-7 Guard Ed Shull (11) both of the Indians look on, while Sophomore 6-3 Forward Ben Price of Mineral City in front of Sophomore 6-0 Forward Roy Buchanan (10) of Mineral City, both of Tusky Valley look hopeful.  (Photo by The Daily Reporter)

DOVER

STONE CREEK 69 - STRASBURG 52!

The roof almost came off bulging Memorial Hall here last night as the Stone Creek Golden Panthers turned giant killers and scored the biggest upset this basketball season to gain the finals of the Class A Tournament.  The Golden Panthers will bid for the coveted crown on Saturday night when it meets the Gnadenhutten Indians, which edged the Trojans 79-75 in the other game last night.

As Tuscarawas Valley fans in the jam-packed hall roared them on, the clawing Panthers Head Coach Ed McGlumphy did what all other county teams failed to do this year...trim the Tigers.  The Strasburg Tigers, ranked 3rd among the State's Class A schools, had lost only to Sandy Valley prior to last night.  Stone Creek had bowed to the Bengals 62-52 during the regular season and that made last night's 11-point triumph all the sweeter.

The Blue and Gold Panthers won their 1st County Tournament Title in 1952 against the Baltic Eagles when they were coached by Ken Newlon, who later was at the Strasburg helm 3 years before going to Canton Lincoln.  This is the 1st year at the Stone Creek helm for McGlumphy.  During the regular season, the Golden Panthers bowed to Gnaden 60-46 and 81-63, but the Blue and Gold, on the basis of their great performance last night, will be difficult to stop.

Gnadenhutten, on the other hand, was given a real scare before conquering Tuscarawas Valley's Trojans in the closing minutes of their contest.  As a result of their victories, Stone Creek and Gnaden qualified for the Sectional Tournament opening here March 6th.  The 3rd berth in the Sectional will be decided tomorrow night at 7:30.  Strasburg, beaten only by Sandy Valley prior to last night's setback, tangles with the Midvale Blue Devils at 7:30 tonight in the Consolation Division semi-finals.  The 8:45 contest will send the Port Washington Purple Riders against Tuscarawas Valley.

Burdened with fouls from the 2nd frame on, the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (1-1) (16-5) (1-1) were forced to play a more conservative game with the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-0) (19-3) (55-48) and consequently didn't have enough steam in the end to pull out a victory.  The Trojans had 29 personal fouls called on them, while only 16 were whistled against the Indians and the cagers of Head Coach Dick Scott took advantage and hit 31 of 42 attempts for a staggering 73.8 percent.

The losers out-scored their opponente from the field 28-24, but the uneven free throw shooting spelled their defeat.  Tuscarawas Valley started out fast and at the end of the 1st quarter seemed to be on its way as it held a 19-15 lead.  But the Tribe, potting 6 field goals and 11 free throws, rolled to an impressive 38-26 lead by intermission.

Senior 6-1 center Ken (Bobo) Haueter of Bolivar went to work after Sophomore 6-3 forward Ben Price of Mineral City was benched in the 3rd stanza and the 6-3 lad, jumping as if he had springs in his legs, tallied 21 points and Tusky Valley moved to within only 5 points 60-55, by the end of that period.  Senior 5-10 Eldon Miller, usual big scorer for Gnadenhutten, was required to sit out most of the 3rd period because he had 4 fouls against him.  When he came off the bench at the start of the 4th quarter, he committed his final personal foul and went to the showers.

Senior guard Ray McFeeders of Bolivar working from the outside, the losers soon had a 4-point lead with less than 3 minutes to go.  But Gnaden capitalized on free throw shots, with Junior 5-7 Ed Shull sinking 7 of 9 attempts and took over the lead with only a few seconds remaining.  TV battled every inch of the way, but the odds were against them and the Tribesmen held on for the victory.

Haueter played an outstanding game under the boards and shouldered the scoring duties with Price and Wolf out of the game.  The big lad dumped in 31 markers.  Senior 5-8 guard Wayne Ruof tallied 12, while Wolf had 10 to round out the scoring for the Red Black and White.  Miller was limited to only 17 points, while Senior 5-7 guard Larry Clark led the Scarlet and Gray array with 22 points, 10 of them on charity tosses.  Shull had 10 points, 8 on free throws and Senior 6-0 forward Larry Biggs 18 points with 8 on free throw shots.
