57 - Midvale Prevails...Strasburg Out! 62-54 (2-22-57)

The Terrific Tigers of Strasburg once again were County League Champions as they picked up their 5th consecutive undefeated title.  In addition, they managed to win their 50th straight county League game and pulled down their 41st home court decisions in a row.  This year's tournament...not so much.  FRONT:  Manager Bob Hall - Don Tracy - Don Weber - Jerry Froman - Terry Zingery and Chuck Burris.  BACK:  Manager Bob Glasgow - George Gessener - Woody Norris - Nick Haswell - Bob Jenel - and Head Coach Chuck Caniford.

DOVER - The "3rd time was the charm" for the Midvale Blue Devils (3-1) (12-10) (69-31) last night.  The cagers of Head Coach Pete Hilliard, defeated twice in regular season play by the Strasburg Tigers (1-2) (18-3) (94-27), lived up to the old adage as they handed the Tigers its 2nd defeat in as many nights in a Consolation Division contest.  Strasburg had previously defeated the Blue Devils 62-55 and 67-64 in regular season games.

The Bengals, suffering from a 60-52 humiliation by the Stone Creek Golden Panthers the night before, started out like they were going to forget the loss and were in the Consolation Division bracket.  But Midvale wasn't to be denied their revenge victory and battled back to knot the count by the end of the 1st quarter showing a 15-15 score.  The "hair-raiser" tilt was tied at least 7 times during the 1st half and the lead changed hands no less than 6 times, but the winners, with the aid of Senior guard John Colombo's 4 shots and an easy layup, edged ahead 28-25 at intermission.

The Cats bounced back and with 6-0 Senior forward Jerry Froman and Junior guard Bob Haswell each netting 4 points the Orange and Black went ahead for the last time in the contest at 35-34.  Colombo soon put the Diablos in the lead with a layukp shot after he had driven the entire length of the court.  Senior forward Dick (Dandy) Leggett took over in the 4th canto and accounted for 12 of the winners 19 points scored.  The red-headed lad dropped in 4 straight free throws with only seconds remaining in the tilt to clinch the decision for the Devils.

Leggett took scoring honors with 26 points, while Colombo added 18 for the Blue and Gold.  Junior 6-0 center Chuck Burris, who was instrumental in cutting the scoring down in the last quarter, led the Strasburg array with 16 markers.  Long-shot Sophomore Nick Haswell followed with 15 points, while Froman had 13.  With the defeat, the Tigers ended the season still with one of the best records in the area losing only to Sandy Valley, Stone Creek and Midvale.
