49 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Returns...Unloads On Bolivar 59-41 (2-24-49)

DENNISON - The Class B Tournament field was narrowed down to 4 teams today following last night's Consolation Division round at which the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates eliminated the Bolivar Cardinals 59-41 and the Gnadenhutten Indians ousted the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 49-46 before a small, but noisy, crowd of 431 fans in the Dennison Gymnasium.  Fans and players today awaited Saturday's final round when the Mineral City Tigers will collide with the Midvale Blue Devils for The Daily Reporter Tournament Trophy and the Pirates will meet the Indians in a Consolation Division Title game.

With a chance to gain a berth in the Dover Sectional Basketball Tournament at stake, 3rd-Year Head Coach Bill Ortt's Corsairs roared back after their Wednesday night loss to the Tigers in the semi-finals to overpower a scrappy flock of Cardinals last night.  The Buccaneers must first eliminate Gnaden on Saturday before cinching their place in the Sectional meet however...a task which may not prove easy.

The Bolivar Cardinals (3-2) (9-15) (42-36), playing their 5th tournament game in 2 weeks, were missing badly and were no match for the sharp-shooting Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (3-1) (18-5) (51-30) after the 1st half.  Numbered among the Red Bird's tournament victims were the Strasburg Tigers, defending Champions, defeated 45-43 last Saturday night.

The Cardinals' surprising surge ended; however, when the Orttmen unleased a fast breaking offense featuring brilliant shooting by Junior guard Glen Zimmerman, Senior forward Clayton Deetz and Junior guard Jim Knox.

Bolivar, paced by Senior forward Dallas Seward, Junior guard Ed Grossenbacher and Junior center Maurice Lundenberger, battled the speedy Bucs on nearly even terms for the 1st quarter and trailed only 16-13 going into the 2nd period.  The Pirates had failed to completely shake the Red Birds at halftime; although, they led 33-24.

In the last half, the Orttmen steadily increased their margin as Zimmerman, Knox and Deetz poured points through the nets with consistency.  Zimmerman led both teams gaining honors by netting 21 points, while Deetz dropped in 12, Knox 10 and Grossenbacher 9 markers respectively.  Hitting double figures for Bolivar were Seward and Lundenberger with 13 and 10 points.
