49 - Strasburg Falls To Midvale 49-40 (2-18-49)

The Midvale Blue Devils Senior Forward Jack Ford pocketed game honors by hitting the nets for 18 points in leading the Blue Devils to an important triumph over the struggling Strasburg Tigers 49-40.  This was the 1st tournament game for Midvale and the 2nd for the Tigers who just got by the Port Washington Purple Riders 42-39 earlier on Wednesday.

DENNISON - The Strasburg Tigers, defending county tournament Champions for the last 4 years, were eliminated by the 1949 County League title winners, the Midvale Blue Devils, 49-40 Friday night in the 3rd rouind of tournament play at Dennison before the largest crowd, 1,126, to attend the meet so far.  As a result of their defeat, the Bengals will drop into the Consolation Division where they will meet the Bolivar Cardinals tonight at 6:30PM in the 1st of a 3-game schedule.

In other games, the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, looking forward to a semi-final battle with the Mineral City Tigers next Wednesday, collides with the Tuscarawas Broncos at 9PM following another Consolation Division battle between the Stone Creek Golden Panthers and Port Washington at 7:45PM.  The Purple Riders were forced into an overtime clash last night to defeat the Dundee Bulldogs 42-39, while the Golden Panthers trounced the Baltic Eagles 67-30.  Both Dundee and Baltic have now dropped out of the tournament after last night's defeat, the 2nd for both teams.

In the feature battle, The Strasburg Tigers (1-1) (15-6) (74-18) battled the favored Midvale Blue Devils (1-0) (20-1) (45-24) into the stretch, but deadly marksmanship by Senior forward Jack Ford and Junior center Bob Sherrell spelled disaster for the Bengals.  Midvale, making its 1st tournament appearance, raced to a 12-point advantage in the 1st quarter and Strasburg made several futile bids to overhaul the League Champions.

With 2 minutes remaining in the final canto, the Tigers trimmed the Blue Devil lead to 6 points, 43-37, but 2 field goals by Sherrell and one by Senior guard Ron Pissocra sealed Strasburg's doom.

Ford paced all scorers with 18 points, while Sherrell was netting 12 markers.  Junior guard Dick Froman led Midvale with 10 points.and was the only Blue Devil to hit double figures.  The Midvale Blue Devils will make its next tournament appearance on Wednesday against the Gnadenhutten Indians in the semi-finals.
