49 - Mineral City Drops Sugarcreek-Shanesville 46-41 (2-23-49)

Tigers scuttle Pirates.  Peak action in the Mineral City -Sugarcreek-Shanesville semi-final battle in the county tournament at Dennison last night as the Tigers defeated the Bucs 46-41 to gain a berth in the finals on Saturday night.  One of the tourney's outstanding stars, 6-2 Senior center Dan Lechner (26) dribbled in toward the Mineral City basket to notch a 2-pointer for the Bengals.  Other Mineral City players are Senior forward Dick Lindsay (24) and Senior forward Clarence Fiddler (21).  Corsairs in the picture are Senior forward Clayton Deetz (63), Junior center Wayne Schrock (66) and Sophomore forward Ike Hochstetler (62).

Mineral City Tigers 6-2 Senior Forward Dan Lechner won game honors and scored 16 points leading the Tigers to a 46-41 victory over the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates last night in a semi-final contest.  Lechner has totaled 37 points in 2 games in tournament play...averaging 18.5 points per game.

DENNISON - Mineral City's Bengals scuttled the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates, the Midvale Blue Devils subdued a serious Gnadenhutten Indians uprising and Bolivar's courageous Cardinals shacked the Tuscarawas Broncos in 3 spine-tingling games Wednesday night which had the jammed house of over 2,000 Class B tournament fans in a continuous uproar in the Dennison Gymnasium.

As a result of their 46-41 triumph over the Corsairs, Mineral City will collide with Midvale, a 39-36 winner over the Gnadenhutten Indians, for the Championship battle for the The Daily Reporter Trophy on Saturday night at 8:45PM.  Sugarcreek-Shanesville will meet the Bolivar Cardinals, a 52-50 winner over Tuscarawas last night, at 8:45 tonight in a Consolation Division semi-final, while Gnadenhutten will collide with the Stone Creek Golden Panthers at 7:30PM in yet another Consolation contest.

Tonight's Consolation Division winners will meet Saturday night at 7:30PM in a Consolation final with the victor entering the Dover Sectional Tournament along with Mineral City and Midvale.

Playing before what was, unofficially, an all-time record tournament crowd, 1st-Year Head Coach Don Hamilton's Mineral City Tigers (2-0) (19-3) (12-38) slammed the door shut on the sharp-shooting Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-1) (17-5) (50-30) in masterful fashion.    The Bengal's offensive featured cool, deliberate, 6-2 Senior center Dan Lechner, agile Senior forward Dick Lindsay and Senior guard Warren Binder, stocky guard, who throttled the Bucs' Junior guard Glen Zimmerman, a factor which proved invaluable in the Tiger's brilliant victory.

It was Lechner, one of the greatest performers ever to hit the tournament trail in Tuscarawas County, who paced the Tigers to a 10-9 first quarter lead over the Pirates.  And it was Lechner who knotted the count at 26-26 in the 3rd stanza after the surging Pirates had taken a 24-19 halftime lead on the basis of some fine marksmanship by Senior forward Clayton Deetz, Sophomore Ike Hochstetler, Junior center Wayne Schrock and Junior guard Jim Knox.  Seconds after Lechner had knotted the count, Binder sent the Bengals into the lead with a set shot, but Knox pulled the Pirates even for the last time with a long shot.

Substitute Junior guard Dale Adams racked up a field goal to send the Tigers out in front 30-28 and the Bengals built this margin up to 5 points, 37-32, at the end of the 3rd quarter.  Mineral City, with victory in sight, fought off a desperate Pirate bid in the final canto.  Midway in the period, the Tigers threatened to run away with the decision as Binder hit a set shot which made the score 42-37 and Lindsay netted a fielder under the nets to make it 44-37.

The Buccaneers, badly off form in shooting all night, rallied momentarily; however, Senior guard Myron Beechy sank a free throw and Knox hit another set shot from mid-court.  Lechner iced the decision for the Tigers seconds later with a lay-up shot to make it 46-40 with seconds remaining.  With Zimmerman throttled by Binder and unable to control the ball off of either boards because of the rebounding of Lechner and Lindsay, the Orttmen lacked enough punch to stem the tide last night.

Zimmerman collected but 4 points, a field goal and 2 free throw shots.  His departure from the game late in the 4th canto via the personal foul route was only anti-climatic.  Hochstetler also fouled out as did Binder and Senior guard Gene Reidl for the Tigers.  Lechner's 16 points paced both teams, while Lindsay was close behind with 12 markers.  Knox and Schrock led the Pirates with 9 points each.
