DOVER - The Strasburg Tigers' polished basketball combination was installed as the absolute peer of the Tuscaraws County Class B League Saturday night after the Tigers rolled to a 91-65 triumph over the Midvale Blue Devils in the Championship game of the 33rd Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament in Memorial Hall.  The smashing victory dispelled any doubtg as to the prowess of the talented Bengals and the sparkling play of Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel was one of the features of the 2-week carnival.

Goose, a talented performer surrounded by other talented players, set a new Tournament Record by scoring 43 points to lead the Strasburg attack and his all-around play and leadership was a big factor in the ease with which the Tigers thumped a battling band of Blue Devils, who 2 weeks ago pressed the Tigers to the limit 97-93.  The Championship contest was preceded by a slam-bang battle for the Consolation Division title with the Baltic Eagles outlasting a fighting Gnadenhutten Indians ball club 68-62 to repeat as the Consolation Division Champions and gain a Sectional Tournament berth alongside Midvale and Strasburg.

Head Coach Ken Newlon's Strasburg Tigers (3-0) (21-2) (91-24) lit into the fight with a resounding thud after a brief interlude of preliminary sparring with the Midvale Blue Devils (3-1) (17-7) (63-30), who started out the tilt by trying to slow up the game.  Control of the boards was the big factor that got the Tigers off and running and after the Bengals warmed up, they rolled to a 20-10 1st quarter lead with "The Goose" tossing in 12 points.

The Blue Devils temporarily stopped the Cats victory express in the 2nd frame as the Diablos succeeded in slowing down the tempo of the game and battled the Orange and Black on equal terms.  Strasburg left the floor at the half time intermission with a 34-23 advantage and in danger of losing Senior Jerry Haswell, who was taken out in the 2nd period after the had picked up 4 personal fouls.

Haswell sat out the entire 3rd stanza, but Senior Jerry (Goose) Von Kaenel, Senior Gene Hensel and Junior Jim Kuecher set a terrific pace and the Tigers slowly began to edge away from the Devils.  Goose, with his teammates feeding him at every opportunity, crashed 17 points through the net in the 3rd period, while a triple-threat Blue and Gold attack set up by Sophomore Dick Leggett, Junior Larry Swinderman and Senior Ron Weaver kept the contest from becoming a complete rout.

In the 4th canto, the versatile Bengals offense rolled along even easier with Haswell coming back into the tilt and joining in on the 30-point spree that eclipsed the big 3rd quarter by 3 points.  The Cats jumped ahead 75-52 before Midvale put on a belated rally staged by Swinderman and Senior Bob Zontini, but Strasburg powered on.  Kuecher, who went scoreless in the 1st quarter, tallied 16 points in the next 3 periods to share 2nd-place scoring honors on the Tigers team with Haswell, while Hensel added 10.

Zontini was the Blue Devils' top scorer as he connected for 19 points, while Weaver added 15, Swinderman chipped in 14 and Leggett counted 12.  The tournament crown was the 14th for Bengals, while it was the 5th time in 6 meetings that a Strasburg team has beaten the Blue Devils in the finals of the annual joust.

During the regular season, Strasburg waylaid Midvale 73-53 in their 1st encounter before the Blue Devils' near miss later.
