55 - Baltic Tops Dover St. Joseph's 84-75 (3-4-55)

The Baltic Eagles 6-3 Senior Errol Jacobs.  Errol scorched the nets for 35 points in leading the Eagles to an 84-75 win against the Dover St. Joseph Ramblers last night at Memorial Hall.  Jacobs has 123 points in 6 tournament games.  He now has an average of 20.5 points per game.

DOVER - With 6-3 Senior Errol Jacobs turning in his best all-around performance in the tournaments thus far, the Baltic Eagles (5-1) (20-6) clawed their way to a final's berth as they trimmed a determined, but erratic, Dover St. Joseph Ramblers Club (15-7) in the fading seconds.  Jacobs' defensive work was not quite up to par, especially after he was tagged with 3 quick personals in the 2nd frame, but the veteran Eagle center personally took charge with his play under the boards and his offensive show to lead the Flyers to victory.

The pivot man tossed in 15 field goals and added 5 free throws for 35 points as he scored in every quarter.  The entire Orange and Black the entire lineup contributed to the surge in the final canto; however, as Baltic caught fire and swept past the Ramblers in the stretch.  Senior Jim Wallace, scoreless for 2 periods, sat out much of the 3rd stanza after he drew his 4th personal foul, but the veteran came back in the 4th quarter and sparked the offensive surge along with Junior George Regula.

Wallace tallied 5 points and Regula got 7, all from the free throw line, to help the Eagles wing away from Dover St. Joseph after a battle that went right up to the final minutes of the contest.  Fouls once again played an import part in a Rambler letdown as the Saints lost the services of regulars with 2 minutes and 30 seconds to go in the contest and still within striking distance, the scoreboard reading 72-68 in favor of the Flyers.

Senior Jim Martinelli and Senior Tom Wise were ousted from the tilt in the stretch, while both Junior George Milyiori and Martinelli sat out much of the 3rd quarter with 4 personals charged to them.  Dover St. Joseph's made but 17 of 38 chances from the free throw stripe as they tightened up, while Baltic gained the margin of victory at the charity line with 26 of 46 chances cashed in.  Both teams tallied 29 fielders.

Milyiori and Wise were the high scorers for the Saints with 24 and 23 points respectively, while Junior Tom Beraducci had 13 points.  Regula and little Sophomore Glen Reidenbach each scored 12 and Senior Fritz Syler tallied 11 for the Eagles.  The Ramblers' appeared to be pulling away from the Flyers near the end of the 1st quarter as the Saints whizzed to a 15-11 lead at the 1st stop and then moved away to a 10-point lead with Milyiori setting the pace.

Head Coach Joe Drotovick's charges raced to a 28-18 lead before Baltic could stem the tide and reverse the picture.  Jacobs began to take charge of the situation and the lanky Eagle Ace led his mates to a 29-28 lead before Dover St. Joseph's could score again.  The contest settled down into a see-saw affair and ended in a 33-33 deadlock at the half.  The Flyers moved back out ahead at the outset of the 3rd stanza, but Baltic's rallied and the lead changed hands 3 times and was deadlocked on 5 different occasions before the Eagles took the edge for keeps 54-52 and then squirted away to a 58-53 advantage at the far turn.

Milyiori and Martinelli came back into the Dover St. Joseph's lineup in the 4th period and the Ramblers remained in contention until the 2:30 mark on the scoreboard when Martinelli and Wise went out on personal fouls.  The Flyers jumped to a 75-68 lead at that point and then held on as Regula connected for 5 straight free throw shots to keep Baltic in command in the last minute of play.

The game was the last for Martinelli, Wise and Senior Norm Recla of the Ramblers and gave the Saints an overall season record of 15-7, one of the best in the school's history.
