48 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Survives A Sharp Little Tigers Charge From Mineral City 39-35 (2-25-48)

Mineral City Tigers 2nd-Year Head Coach Bob R Tawzer is pictured above.  Tawzer guided the Tigers to an 11-12 season which included an upset of the Tuscarawas Broncos 49-37 during the county tournament.

DOVER - The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (2-1) (12-8) (46-29) side-stepped a Bengal charge from the Mineral City Tigers (1-2) (11-12) (10-38) as the Buccaneers came up with a 39-35 win at Memoral Hall in a Consolation Division contest on Wednesday night.

Sugarcreek-Shanesville's fast-moving raiders, after holding 1st and 2nd quarter leads of 10-8 and 16-14, fell behind the pace in the 3rd period and trailed 31-23 going into the final canto, but a brilliant rally, led by Junior forward Clayton Deetz, Senior forward Don Miller and Sophomore guard Jim Knox pulled the game out of the fire for 2nd-Year Head Coach Bill Ortt's Bucs.

With the score tied 33-33 midway in the final stanza, Strasburg's Miller meshed a field goal, Junior guard Clarence Fiddler of Mineral City knotted the count again, but Miller and Deetz sank 2 fast doubledeckers to give the Pirates the final decision.

Junior 6-0 center Dan Lechner, the Tigers ace, gave his usual stellar performance in racking up 13 points and playing a brilliant floor game.  Miller and Knox divided the scoring honors for the winners with 10 markers each.
