48 - Four Schools Represented On All-Tournament Team

DOVER - Four schools are represented on The Daily Reporter's All-Tournament Team, 2 from the Championship Strasburg Tigers quintet and one each from the Dundee Bulldogs, Mineral City Tigers and Midvale Blue Devils, County League Champions and tournament runner-up.  Three of the 1st five are Seniors and 2 are Juniors with a year of competition left at their respective schools.

Of the 5 men named to 1st team posts, only one, Senior Clarence Yackey, Strasburg's 6-6, 222 pound center, was a unanimous choice.  This player would be a standout in any League and was named to the All-Ohio 1st team last year.  It was Yackey who poured 20 points through the nets to give his team a victory last Saturday night over a stubborn, rallying Midvale quintet.  A great clutch player, a fine team man and an excellent defensive performer in addition to his offensive strength.  Yackey is one of the greatest hardwood artists ever to be developed in county Class B circles.

At one forward slot, Midvale's spark-plug and captain, Junior Jack Ford, has been placed, with a year of competition left.  Ford started rallies against the Bolivar Cardinals and Dundee that eventually brought the Blue Devils up from the rear to victory.  He was consistently a great offensive threat and an excellent ball handler.  Ford, more than any one man, gave the Blue Devils the spark they needed to drive through to the finals and against the Mighty Strasburg Tigers, netted 13 of his teams 30 points with his deadly hook shot.

Junior Dan Lechner, Mineral City's center, has been placed at the other 1st team forward slot over such stellar performers as Senior Dan Carlisle of Midvale and Senior Don Miller of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates.  The choice was not easy, but justified on the basis of Lechner's fine competitive spirit and all-around ability.  Although, he appeared in only 3 games, Lechner was a star with one of the tournament's middle-strength clubs and it was largely his performances that kept the Tigers going.  Lechner will be around again next year.

Dundee's great clutch player, Senior Paul Kate, has been placed at the one guard post.  Kate was one of the best competitors in the tournament and it was his 18 points which nearly upset Midvale.  His turnovers from faulty ball-handling were negligible and his offensive driving power under the basket was spectacular.  Of the 4 teams to face him, not one was able to halt his cut and dribble-in shot.

Strasburg's sharpshooting Senior Tom Haswell was named at the other guard slot.  Haswell, with Yackey, formed the Bengal one-two punch which blasted every team that faced them.  An adept ball handler and deadly marksman, Haswell was easily one of the tournament's best performers.

The battle between Lechner and Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Don Miller for 1st team honors was close.  Miller sparked the Pirates to a Consolation Division Trophy after the Bucs were eliminated by Strasburg in the lower bracket.  He was one of the best marksmen in the tournament and is playing his last year for the Pirates.

Diminutive Dan Carlisle of Midvale, Senior Harold (Hal) Huston of the Port Washington Purple Riders, Junior Gene Montague of Gnadenhutten Indians and Junior Verle Buehler of Stone Creek Golden Panthers, one of the tourney's brightest individual stars, form the remainder of the 2nd five.
