48 - Right Down The Line

The Daily Reporter
Dover, Ohio

IN WINNING The Daily Reporter Tournament Trophy Saturday night, the Strasburg Tigers became the 1st county Class B team to cop 4 consecutive tourney titles and it was a very happy and hilarious group of Tiger fans who streamed out on the court at Memorial Hall to celebrate the hard-earned 42-30 decision over the Midvale Blue Devils, only team in the County League to defeat the Bengals this year.

Chief target of the Strasburg fan's affection was big 6-6 Senior center Clarence Yackey who poured 20 points through the nets and crushed the Blue Devil hopes almost single-handed in the 2nd and 3rd quarters when he collected 13 of his total.

MIDVALE; however, had the bitter pill of defeat alleviated somewhat when County Superintendent W.E. Laws presented the Blue Devils with the New Philadelphia Daily Times Trophy that was the reward for winning the County League title this year.

SUGARCREEK-SHANESVILLE'S PIRATES received the Consolation Division Trophy awarded by the S. Toomey Company of Dover and Midvale received a 2nd trophy for tournament runner-up position from the Sanitary Milk Company of Dover and Canton.  Ten gold basketballs were awarded the Strasburg Tigers by the Marsh Wall Products of Dover and 10 silver basketballs, given by the George Deardorff and Son Hardware Company of Dover, went to Midvale.  Basketballs used in tourney play were awarded by the Godfrey Electric Store in Dover.

CLARENCE YACKEY'S 4 game total of 76 points was high individual mark of the tournament, but missed by one point the 77 markers recorded by Bolivar's Junior Murray in last year's tournament.

Yackey and Jack Ford of Midvale copped the high single game total.  The Bengal center meshed 26 points against Gnadenhutten and Ford hit 26 against the Dundee Bulldogs for the top mark of the joust.  Dundee's Paul Kate, who last year racked up 28 in one game, missed this by 4 Saturday night when he collected 24 in the Bulldog's loss to Sugarcreek-Shanesville.

OTHER TOURNAMENT SCORING STARS included Tom Haswell of Strasburg with 74 in 4 games, Glen Zimmerman, Pirate guard 66 in 5 tilts; Bob Gardner of Dundee 65 in 4 games; Jim Knox and Gene Miller of Sugarcreek-Shanesville with 61 each in 5 games; Jack Ford of Midvale 58 in 3 games, Verle Buehler of Stone Creek 51 in 3 games and Dan Lechner of Mineral City 41 in 3 contests.

ABOUT 250 FANS were left standing outside the doors at Memorial Hall Saturday night when officials put the "S.R.O." sign out at 7:05PM.  Twenty-five minutes before the 1st game they were there long after the doors were shut, hoping for seats that were just not available.

THIS YEAR'S TOURNAMENT topped the attendance mark of the 1947 meet.  A total of about 6,567 fans saw the 6 sessions this year and 5,563 witnessed last year's games.  Supt. W.E. Laws, who thanked the crowd Saturday night for their cooperation, is to be commended along with his entire staff of tournament officials for the manner in which they handled the tourney.  It was a job well done.

LITTLE DICK KATE, who broke up the Dundee-Stone Creek scoring duel the 1st week of the tournament when he came into the game and dropped 3 points through the nets and gave the Bulldogs the victory margin, returned to the floor Saturday night and received a nice hand from the fans.  Although, he didn't score any this time, Dick conducted himself like a veteran

TUSCARAWAS COUNTY TEAMS will have the best record of any quintets in the Sectional joust starting Wednesday night at Memorial Hall.  Strasburg heads the list with a 25-2 record, while Midvale stands at 22-3.  The Walnut Creek Cardinals, Holmes County Champions, has a 16-4 mark, while the Berlin Blue Jays, edged by the Cardinals in the Holmes Tournament, has a 17-6 mark.  All records include tournament play.
