48 - Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates Wins 14th Annual Consolation Division Basketball Tournament Championship 64-48 (2-28-48)

DOVER - A last quarter point splurge by 2nd-Year Head Coach Bill Ortt's Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (4-1) (14-8) (48-29) broke up what had been a nip-and-tuck ball game for 3 periods and gave the Bucs the decision over 1st-Year Head Coach Fritz Jacobs' Dundee Bulldogs (2-2) (14-10) (21-38) in the Consolation Division finals.  It was the 1st Consolation Division Championship for the Pirates.

The Buccaneers held a 1st quarter margin of 21-20, but the Bulldogs knotted the count at 28-28 at halftime and were trailing only 38-36 at the end of the 3rd stanza.  The 1st half developed into a scoring duel between Dundee's 5-10 Senior guard Paul Kate and 6-0 Senior center Bob Gardner and Sugarcreek-Shanesville's Sophomore guard Jim Knox, Junior forward Clayton Deetz and Freshman guard Glen Zimmerman.

After battling on nearly even terms during the 3rd quarter, Senior forward Gene Miller broke loose for the Pirates and netted 12 points to nullify any chances the Bulldogs had of pulling the game out of the fire.  Paul Kate scored 24 points, half of Dundee's total, while Gardner was collecting 19.  Miller tallied 21 for the winners, while Zimmerman was garnering 18.

As a result of Saturday night's tournament finals, the Strasburg Tigers, Midvale Blue Devils and Sugarcreek-Shanesville , along with the Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers, Dennison Railroaders and Dennison St. Mary's Blue Wave will represent Tuscarawas County in the Sectional Tournament being managed this year by Don Campbell, Dover High School Coach.

The tournament will run 4 nights, starting Wednesday and continuing through Saturday.  The 2 winners will enter the District meet at Steubenville next week.
