48 - Midvale Escapes Bulldogs Of Dundee 48-44 (2-25-48)

Senior guard Paul Kate (3), Dundee Bulldog ace and Junior center Jack Renicker (9), Midvale Blue Devils, battle for control of the ball in Wednesday night's torrid battle won by the Blue Devils 48-44 in the last 2 minutes of the game.  Also in on the action are Sophomore forward Dean Landis (6), Senior guard Ralph King (8) and Senior center Bob Gardner (12), all of Dundee.

DOVER - In nosing out the Dundee Bulldogs (1-1) (12-10) (20-36), the League Champions Midvale Blue Devils (2-0) (22-2)(44-23) was forced to come from behind to break a 44-44 tie with less than 2 minutes remaining and it was again the hook shot artist, Junior forward Jack Ford, who starved off a disaster which had threatened the Blue Devils throughout the contest as Dundee's 5-10 sensational Senior guard Paul Kate, 6-0 Senior center Bob Gardner and Sophomore forward Stan Immel spirited Head Coach Fritz Jacobs' quintet to a 19-12 first quarter lead and kept the Bulldogs on pace for the remainder of the battle.

Late in the 4th canto, it was Ford who whipped in a hook shot under the basket to give the Blue Devils a 46-44 lead after Kate, one of the tournament's standout performers, had knotted the count.  Earlier in this quarter, Kate knotted the score at 40-40 with a free throw shot.

Before the 1st quarter was 4 minutes old, Dundee brought the crowd to its feet with a dazzling offense that gave the Bulldogs a 10-3 margin.  Midvale; however, with Ford hitting down inside the Dundee zone defense with his hook shot, pulled up a little before the period ended.

The Blue Devils forged a 28-25 halftime lead on the basis of Ford's 4 doubledeckers and Sophomore center Bob Sherrell's 3 field goals, but the sharp-breaking Bulldogs were constantly breaking up the Midvale passing and stalling the attack inside their tight defensive barrier.

Midway in the 3rd stanza, Dundee had held a 35-34 margin until Ford slipped through the defenses to mesh a field goal and the Blue Devil ace made it 38-35 seconds later when he broke loose again.  Gardner deuced from the pivot just before the quarter ended to make it 38-37.

At the outset of the final canto it was Kate again who gave Dundee a slim 39-38 lead as he weaved through the Midvale defense and netted a lay-up but Junior forward Jim Golder, scoreless until this period, broke loose under the Blue Devil basket and sent Midvale out in front 40-39.

At this point, Kate hit from the foul circle and knotted the count, while Gardner counted from the field to make it 42-40.  A free throw shot by Ford and another dribble in shot by Golder gave the Blue Devils a 43-42 margin at the automatic time-out.

In the remaining 3 minutes, Kate knotted the score at 44-44, but doubledeckers by Ford and Golder iced the game for Midvale.  Ford led both teams with 26 points, while Kate garnered 18 Gardner 11 and Immel 10 for Dundee.
