43 - Friday Night's 3-Game Wrap-up

DOVER - Without a single upset to jostle the move, the 21st Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament eased into the groove at Memorial Hall last night with some 600 fans watching the 3 games that saw the Strasburg Tigers, Stone Creek Golden Panthers and Gnadenhutten Indians emerge victorious and remain in the running.  Stone Creek took out the Dundee Bulldogs 59-22, Strasburg defeated the Port Washington Purple Riders 47-21 and Gnaden, defending Eastern Ohio District Champion, eliminated the Midvale Blue Devils 48-21.

The victories scored by the Creekers and Head Coach Clayton "Doc" Kessler's Strasburg Tigers moved them only to the 2nd round of play, whereas the Gnadenhutten victory moved the Indians into the semi-final bracket where they next week will meet the winner of the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates tussle with the Tuscarawas Broncos.

While it would be fairly easy to pick Sugarcreek-Shanesville and the Bolivar Cardinals to win their games tonight, it would be quite a task to hand the nod to either Strasburg or Stone Creek on the basis of their games last night.  Both had easy times, but both showed traces of excellent basketball that promises to furnish the 1st fireworks of the joust.  Strasburg will hold an edge on height and last night used that height to great advantage over Port Washington, a smooth-working fast-passing combine that for a time threatened to make a close race of it.
