43 - 21st Annual Tuscarawas County Class B Basketball Tournament (1943)







DOVER - Drawings for the Tuscarawas County Annual Class B Basketball Tournament, which will qualify 2 teams for the Eastern Ohio Sectional Tournament, were held last night, dropping the Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates and Strasburg Tigers, the county's 2 leading combinations, into separate brackets and pitting the Stone Creek Golden Panthers and Dundee Bulldogs against each other in the opening games on February 19th.  The tournament will be held at Memorial Hall here and runs February 19, 20, 26 and 27 with the 2 winning teams returning the following week for the Sectional competition which will inturn qualify 2 teams for the Eastern Ohio District finals.

The Gnadenhutten Indians, Sugarcreek-Shanesville, Strasburg, Bolivar Cardinals and Stone Creek were all seeded in the brackets before the drawing with coaches of the various combinations voting on the seeding arrangement which heretofore had been determined by the position of the teams in the County League race...which had been canceled for this year.

County School Superintendent W.E. Laws is Manager of the tournament and presided at last night's drawings.  Head Coach Earl Sundheimer's Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates are the ranking No. 1 team in the county.  Sundheimer is back for his 10th year after a 3 year absence where he was Head Coach in Sugarcreek for 9 years. The League was suspended for this year; however, the teams did play games when they could schedule teams that were nearby.  The standings were:
