DENNISON - Spirited play-making by Junior Chet (Duff) Summers and the suddenly aroused play of Sophomore Dean Kerns played key roles for Tusky's victory in the fading seconds of play.  The Baltic Eagles (1-1) (4-4) (14-8) took the lead at the outset and held the pole by slim margins until 6:18 minutes were left in the 3rd stanza.  The Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (4-4) (11-8) took a 27-26 advantage at this point on a corner shot by veteran Senior Gary Caviness.  The 2 teams then fought tooth-and-nail and the lead shifted 8 more times before the Broncos went into the lead for good at 43-41 with 3:48 left in the game.

The advantage came on a perfect feed-in by Senior Chip McCahill to young Kerns, with the lanky pivot man shortly following this with a rebound 2-pointer off a missed free throw by McCahill.  His quick 4 points, with only 3:23 now remaining in the game gave the Riders a 45-41 advantage.  Not until 1:53 minutes were left did either team hit the nets again as both had costly turnovers in a game now nerve-racking for all concerned.  Senior John Rice, limited to only 2 field goals in the 1st three quarters, hit from the corner for the Eagles to cut the margin to 2 at 45-43.  In the next few seconds the Blue and White turned the tide in grand fashion as Summers took a rebound off the Flyer boards and dribbled the length of the court for a layup, while Sophomore Phil Meese canned 3 straight free throw tosses as the Orange and Black were now forced to commit personal fouls to stop the clock.

Meese's pressure firing gave the Tusky Broncos a 50-43 lead with 36 seconds remaining.  But, the Baltic Eagles refused to give up, rallying back with a rebounder by Rice and a steal by Senior Gary Gerber to cut the margin to 3 again at 50-47 with 10 seconds on the clock.  As 8 seconds showed, Summers was awarded a one-and-one and the 5-8 Junior hit the first.  The Eagles were then allowed to fire away at the basket.  Gerber hitting from close in as the clock ran out.

The victors for Head Coach Kermit Smalbach's Broncos was a great team effort in every sense of the word.  While the Flyers managed to hold down usually high scoring Caviness to 13 points,  Tuscarawas took full advantage of the defensive maneuver with Summers having one of his best nights with 15 points.  Kerns dropped in 10 and Meese 9 markers.  While Summers was "Johnny on the Spot" most of the evening, including all-important rebounds in the fading seconds, it was the defensive board play of McCahill and Kerns which stood out as big assets in the Bronco victory.  Kerns came off the bench in the 2nd quarter and after a rather mediocre frame, came to life in the 2nd half to score 10 points and play like a demon on the boards.

Gary Gerber, a fine cage artist who had been cutout of the Baltic lineup since the middle of January with a hairline fracture in his leg tallied 22 points to top the Eagles.  Rice, who went into the contest with 378 points, was held to 9 by the Broncos for his 2nd lowest output of the season, wherein may lie another big reason for the Tusky victory.   The Blue and White hit 23 of 58 from the field for 39 percent, while the Orange and Black meshed 22 of 65 for 33 percent.
