60 - A Pre-Season Look At The Garaway Pirates

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Possessing all the attributes of an outstanding basketball team, Garaway High School already looms as the "team to beat" for the County League Championship.  Opening the season with 4 straight victories, the up-county cagers from the vicinity of Sugarcreek-Shanesville-Dundee are hoping to satisfy the hunger of their faithful fans who have not rooted home a County League or Tournament champion in some 15 years.

Head Coach Jim Stull, in his 5th year at the helm, thus hopes to guide his prospects toward these goals.  In League play, The Garaway Pirates have been unsuccessful in gaining a crown in the 2 years of its consolidation, while Sugarcreek-Shanesville last reigned as League kings in 1944.  Dundee never won either title.  In facr, since 1938 Sugarcreek-Shanesville has won only one League Championship.  This was the year the Pirates won both titles and racked up 26 straight wins before bowing in the 1st game of the Regional Tournament.

The promising outlook of the Pirates rests with the number of returning lettermen from last year's squad and 2 Senior players who have seen Varsity service since they were Freshmen.  Hoping to spark this year's bid for County Honors are:

6-2 Charles Stingel
5-11 Karon Zhender

Both All-County performers last year.

Stingel potted 317 points his Sophomore year and had 333 last season for 650 over the span, while Zehnder canned 231 as a Sophomore and 267 as a Junior.

In addition to these men are 3 others who saw considerable play last season:

6-2 Tom Andreas (95 Points)
5-11 Jim Geiser (79 Points)
5-4 Bud Yakley (87 Points)

Others in contention for Varsity roles are:

6-1 Tom Dannis
6-1 Bob Raber
5-9 Bob Tidrick
6-1 Bill Yakley

Both Yakleys, Andreas and Raber are Juniors, while the remainder are Seniors.

Hopes are high indeed at Garaway this season, but they would be the 1st to admit that history reveals the Tuscarawas County Class A League is one of the toughest in the State.
