60 - A Pre-Season Look At The Strasburg Tigers

NEW PHILADELPHIA - Following their 1st losing season (6-13) in 7 years last season, Strasburg High School sets its sight on a rebirth.  First, after last year's coach resigned because he felt "they expect too much from everyone", Strasburg hired a new mentor in Warren Binder.  Before the season opened the new head coach promised he was going to do everything possible to put the Bengals back on the basketball map and give the rabid cage town something to shout about.

The Strasburg Tigers dropped its first 2 games of the season.  But, neither youthful coach Binder or the fans have given up.  The Tigers lost only one player from last year's squad and possess both speed and size to kindle this season's hope to return the Bengals among the contenders.

For 5 straight years Strasburg reigned as the County League Champions...from 1953 through 1957...as they won 50 straight League contests as well as 44 straight games on their home floor.  In fact, the Strasburg Tigers have lost only 10 of their last 61 home games.  Among the returnees this season is last year's top scorer 6-3 Frank Wallick who totaled 262 points.  All told, 7 letter winners of the 1958-59 squad are working for Varsity berths under Coach Binder.

Other lettermen include:

6-0 Charles Duff
5-6 Donald Grave
6-0 Walt Krantz
6-1 Dale Liggett
6-2 Bill Seese
5-8 Larry Wallick

Two others who did not win letter last season, but are expected to see Varsity service and add height to the cause, are:

6-3 Junior Jim Davis
6-1 Sophomore Jim Clymer

Davis hit for 108 points as a Sophomore and Clymer hit 24 when he moved into Varsity service late in the season.

Although off to a rough start, one must remember Strasburg is still the same town where basketball was once almost a necessity of life.  And, there is also the fact that it sometimes takes a team awhile to completely digest the new methods usually employed by a new coach.  In other words...STRASBURG EYES A COMEBACK!
