DENNISON - Another fine throng of 1,000 was on hand on Saturday night as the Tuscarawas Broncos and the Garaway Pirates won hard-earned verdicts for semi-final berths in the Tuscarawas County Class A Basketball Tournament at Dennison, set for this coming Friday.  In the semi-action the Broncos (11-8) will square off with the Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (14-4) at 7:30 , while the  League Champions and tournament favorite Pirates (18-1) will meet the Strasburg Tigers (8-11) in the 8:45 booking.  Both winners are assured of Sectional Tournament berths; although, they will first meet for the tourney title on Saturday at 8.00.

Saturday's cage warfare lived up to county tradition as both games furnished plenty of exciting basketball with both verdicts actually determined in the fading minutes.  In the opener, Tusky came up off the deck after trailing for over 2 quarters to bring in a spine thrilling 51-49 victory over the Baltic Eagles, while in the nightcap the Gnadenhutten Indians gave the touted Corsairs of Sugarcreek-Shanesville a few "fits" before failing 79-63.

Paying no heed to the press-clippings and prestige of the 1960 League Champion Garaway Pirates (1-0) (8-0) (18-1) the Gnadenhutten Indians (0-1) (3-5) (11-10) may very well have turned in the most inspired performance of the 38th Annual Tournament.  The Pirates, a lopsided winner over the Indians twice this season, found the less-experienced Tribe a determined aggregation that refused to quit.  Down by 13-points in the 2nd frame and 11 at halftime, the Warriors fired back in the 2nd half to all but pull the major upset of 1960.

On the jumping and shooting antics of 6-2 Senior John Hall, who hit 11 points in the 3rd stanza, the Scarlet and Gray, whittled the margin first to 4 points at 61-57 and then to 3 points at 65-62 and 67-64 before faltering in the stretch.  But, the poise and the balance of the Corsairs of Garaway paid off when it counted with 4-year veteran 6-1 Charles Stingel rising up as the "take-charge-guy" for the League Champions.  With the score at 67-63 with 2:33 left in the game, Stingel led a Garaway Pirate uprising with 6 from the field for 32 percent, while the free throw line showed 25 successes in 34 attempts.  The Pirates combine of Head Coach Jim Stull potted 33 of 81 from the field for 40 percent.  Showing an extreme, the Corsairs could find the hoop only 6 times in 22 attempts in the 1st quarter, while dropping 11 of 19 in the 2nd period.
