54 - Tusky Stops Dundee 80-61 (2-17-54)

The 1954 Tuscarawas Broncos Basketball Team.  FRONT:  Jim Lawver (Manager) - Ralph Vesco - Dave Myers - Terry Deems - Larry Myers - Harry Thompson - Ed Hill and Joe Vesco (Manager).  BACK:  Bob Armstrong - Rich Davis - Jim Henry - Ted Riggle - Ben Roth - Jerry Briggs and Head Coach Chuck Lorenz.

Terry Deems, 6-2 newcomer, is on the Tuscarawas Broncos' Varsity Team this year.  Terry, a member of last year's Reserve Squad, was groomed to step in and help out with the rebounding as well as add offensive punch.  He has done both so far this year as a Junior.  In the scoring column, he has contributed mightily to the Broncos' high-scoring attack and has been a big aid in the under-the board work.  Last night he scorched the nets for 25 points in the win over the Dundee Bulldogs.

Bob Baker is the Dundee Bulldogs' sharpshooting guard.  As a Sophomore last season, Bob came into his own and was the big scorer on the Bulldog quintet that earned a reputation as a scrapping member of the crew.  This season the little front man is 3rd in the scoring department for the Pups.  In Dundee's losing effort, Baker burned the Broncos' defensive effort with a whopping 28 points.

DOVER - The Port Washington Purple Riders (1-0) and the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) galloped clear across the brackets into the semi-finals by virtus of their victories in the 2nd night of the 32nd Annual Tuscarawas County Class B carnival in Memorial Hall.  The Purple Riders rallied in the last half to tame the Mineral City Tigers (0-1) 64-57 and the Broncos trumped the Dundee Bulldogs (1-1), just off a winning effort against the Stone Creek Golden Panthers 62-49, 80-61 before a near capacity crowd.

Tonight's fare has 2 Consolation Division games on the bill with Stone Creek (0-1) and the Bolivar Cardinals (0-1) colliding in the opener at 6:30 and Midvale (0-1) and Mineral City locking horns in the 2nd contest.  The Sugarcreek-Shanesville Pirates (0-0) will see their 1st action of the meet in the feature contest at 9:00 when they clash with the Baltic Eagles (1-0).

Both of last night's winners will be idle until next Thursday when Tuscarawas meets the winner between Baltic and Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Port Washington takes on the winner between the Strasburg Tigers (1-0) and Gnadenhutten Indians (0-0).

A large part of the crowd took up for the Dundee  Bulldogs (1-1) (13-10) (31-48) in the nightcap and the Bulldogs gave the fans their money's worth as they battled the Broncos to a stand-still in the final 2 periods.  Little Junior guard Bob Baker put on a real shooting show for the fans as he lofted the ball high over the Tuscarawas Broncos (1-0) (16-2) (43-40) and their zone defense to pierce the nets 12 times.

Senior guard Duane Immel joined Baker in the shooting show over the tight Broncos' zone defense and the pair had the crowd cheering loudly as they sent the ball through the nets time and again.  Baker's 28 points were top for both teams, but Tusky's big guns were too much for the Pups.  Tuscarawas had the inner cordon of the Dundee defense tied up in knots and 6-1 Senior forward Dick Slemmer was held to one action shot for the 3 quarters that he played.

A bigger blow to the Bulldog chances was the loss of Senior forward Dale Hostetler just as the 3rd stanza got underway and Slemmer's banishment via personal fouls near the close of the same period.  Sophomore center Dale Levengood followed in the opening minutes of the final canto and the Pups' chances disappeared.  Big Junior forward Terry Deems was the top offensive star for the Broncos as he controlled most of the rebounds and generally made a nuisance of himself to Dundee.

Deems tallied 25 markers, mostly on tips and close-in shots and Senior forward Harry Thompson gave Tusky a big lift when they needed it in the 2nd frame as he connected 4 times from action and once from the free throw line for 9 points.  Thompson's point-burst came at the right time to offset some beautiful set shooting by the Bulldogs' 2 little guards.  Baker pumped 3 baskets in the 1st quarter, added a pair in the 2nd stanza and came through with 6 more in the 3rd period when he became the Pups' only scoring punch.  Immel came up with several more long set shots and the pair of little guards kept Tuscarawas hustling all the way.

Dundee led briefly in the opening quarter, but Deems began scoring fast at the close of the 1st period and the Broncos took a lead they never relinquished.  Immel and Baker kept the Bulldogs within striking distance right up until the closing part of the 1st half when Deems, Thompson and Junior guard Rich Davis maneuvered the Broncos into the driver's seat.

The Tusky crew had a 61-47 edge at the close of the 3rd canto and the Pups loss of their rebounding power was the deciding factor as the Riders scored handily through the last minutes.  Baker led the losers with an amazing 28 points and Immel dropped in 16, while Deems came in right behind Baker with 25 points of his own for the winners.  Thompson and Davis got into double figures with 18 and 10 markers as well
